For special items like clothes we went "up the town" i.e. to Birmingham
city centre - on the bus.
New Street
Here were two large department stores, Grey’s
and Lewis’s; Rackham’s appeared later on. We used to buy clothes and
material to make clothes from. Sometimes we bought clothes from the small
corner shops. We hardly ever bought other large items like furniture.
At Christmas we used to go "Up Town" to one of the large stores to see
Father Christmas.
