Memories of Grandfather

John Bowles 10 March 1883 - 23 July 1960 by his daughter Charlotte Rebecca Knight

The following pages, written by my mother before she died, describe her memories of him.

My father was born on the 10 march 1993 at Nechays Farm, Bradninch, Devon. He was a delicate baby with hesitant speech until he was about four years old. When he was a child the family moved to Fair Oak Farm, Upottery where he together with his brothers and sisters went to school. Whilst still a school bay the family moved again to Hollow Meadow Farm, Snitterfield, Warwicks, transporting all the stock, animals and farm implements by rail. In 1895 when he was twelve years old, his mother died and is buried in Snitterfield churchyard. Another move was then made to Claverdon Hall Farm. When the Claverdon Hall Estate was sold about 1900 the family split up, my father and his sister going to work for their Uncle on his farm at Bradninch in Devon. Meanwhile his two brothers had employment in Birmingham. My father, as a young man left Devon and went to work also in Birmingham.
Left is a picture of grandfather and grandmother.
