In 1906, when a young man, he and his brother were walking in Whittall Street one
Sunday and saw my mother who was on her way to St. Mary's church. Dad said to Harry
"That's the young lady I'm going to marry" and after speaking to her and making her
acquaintance he met her in St. Mary's Church the following Sunday, the start of a three
year courtship. They were married on 12 Dec 1909 and set up home in Don Street, Winson Green.
When the vicar of St. Mary's visited them he said what a nice home they had. Dad replied,
"Wherever Mother was, was Home even if they only had an orange box for a table".
I was born in 1912, after moving to Preston Road. Another move was made to Newcombe Road,
Handsworth which in those days was bordering on the countryside.
My brother was born in 1917. We sometimes went to St. Mary's church but became regular
members of St. Andrew, Handsworth. Dad belonged to Wattville Road Men's bible class, which
he attended regularly every Sunday afternoon. Often on Sunday evenings he would read the
Parish Magazine serial to Mother, I think it was St. Mary's, Whittall Street magazine.
