Clackmannanshire District, the smallest
District Council in Scotland, often referred to as "The Wee County",
contains all of the "Hillfoots Villages" of Menstrie, Alva, Tillicoultry and
Dollar. Although Tillicoultry has been officially classified as a town
for many years the local residents still prefer to think of it as one of the
"Hillfoots Villages", albeit the largest of them.
As can be seen from the map above,
Tillicoultry is centrally placed with easy access at Stirling to motorway
links to Glasgow (M80), Edinburgh (M9 south) and Perth (M9 north) with each
of these cities no more than 25 miles distant. Likewise Stirling is the main
artery for the rail network, Scotrail, linking North to Perth, Inverness,
Dundee and Aberdeen, South West to Glasgow and South East to Edinburgh.
The Ochil Hills form a stunning backdrop to the hillfoots villages, here the
V-shaped glen, enclosing the nature trail, rises magestically behind
Tillicoultry.
