Mace denies Mallett spring trophy treble

NICK MACE and the Guernsey Rifle Club team finished the Bank Holiday weekend with two causes to celebrate.

The 2000 Wilkinson Sword winner returned to his London home as winner of the Albany, and the home team won the triangular team match with the 1998 National Rifle Association team and the London and Middlesex Rifle Association.
Guernsey captain Peter Jory had been particularly keen to continue Guer-nsey’s winning form.
‘We last shot against this NRA team three years ago when they beat us by only four points.
‘Following on from our team successes last year I feel confident we can beat them this time,’ he said beforehand.
And win they did.
By the time shooting finished at 300 yards, Guernsey were trailing the NRA team by four points and level with London and Middlesex.
However at 600 yards, Guernsey managed to improve on their earlier score thanks to some confident coaching by Richard Perkins in relatively strong and tricky wind conditions.
This improvement was enough to secure victory for Guernsey who beat the NRA team by a single point.
The individual competition opened with a Queens I course of fire, which was won by Simon Osmond of the NRA who finished without dropping a single point.
Dave Jory won the B class trophy, the Highfield, with a highly credible score of 99 out of 105.
The following morning saw another early start for the Renouf Trophy and conditions had hardly changed from the previous day.
Shooting commenced at 300 yards where seven out of the 35 competitors managed to complete the range without dropping a point.
On completion of the 500-yard detail, there were still three competitors who had gone clean, making for an exciting finish at 600 yards.
First to finish at 600 yards were Lucy Mace and Ian Donaldson who had tied for the top score.
However, it was not until the last competitors had finished that they realised that they had both been pipped at the post by Cliff Mallett of Jersey, who scored a 149 out of 150.
Jeremy Witham took top honours in B class with a superb score of 145.
The final competition, the Albany, was fired in more changeable wind conditions.
After shooting 15 rounds at both 500 and 600 yards, Cliff Mallett must have once again thought he had secured the trophy before he had to leave to catch the ferry back to Jersey.
But Nick Mace managed to hold his nerve and deny the Jerseyman the trophy with a score of 149.21, beating Mallett on central bulls alone.
