The number of members has fallen in recent weeks. It would be very much appreciated if existing members of the 200 Club would assist by suggesting to their Dance Club membership and friends that they support this worthy cause. Since its commencement in 1989 the 200 Club has been able to donate nearly £25,000 towards the upkeep and improvements of Halsway Manor. Many visitors to the Manor will have enjoyed the benefit of en suite rooms. This is an ongoing, expensive and necessary programme that enables the Manor to compete with other centres and hotels. This also means that a further £25,000 has been distributed in prizes to many of our 200 Club members! |

With the demise of the Friends of Halsway Manor we are fortunate in that several of the Friends have given their allegiance to the 200 Club. This means that we now have 213 members and the donations to the Society and the future values of the prize monies will increase accordingly. We hope that other past members of the Friends will also wish to support the 200 Club. We shall endeavour to see that the 200 Club donations to the Society are spent in the best possible way for the benefit for all who visit the Manor. |

We have been maintaining 188 members for some time now, but we would like to get back to the club’s target of 200 members. Could I ask present members of the 200 Club to persuade one or two further members of their local club to support our fund-raising for Halsway? As you can see from recent draw results the prizes are spread widely within folk clubs. |

In April the committee were able to send to the Friends of Halsway Manor another cheque for £1,000. With this contribution, it means that we are proud to announce that this year we have passed £20,000 in donations; an achievement which over the years has helped, in many ways, to improve the amenities at The Manor. But not only that, folks, it does mean that £20,000 has been paid out to the many lucky prize winners, so please don't resign yourselves to being a loser; it may be your lucky number in our forthcoming regular bi-monthly draws! |

As many of you will already know Steve Stevenson sadly passed away in June. He set up and was Treasurer of the Friends of Halsway Manor 200 Club for fifteen years and remained a Committee member until his death. He was also a much-loved member of Guildford Folk Dance Club and its Chairman for many years. Among his many talents in the folk dance world were rapper sword, morris, social dance and a mainstay of the Club’s callers. We all miss him very much. We have lost a few members since the beginning of the year and would therefore ask readers to give serious consideration to help maintain our 200 membership. |

Congratulations to the winners. Commiserations to those whose luck has yet to reveal itself! For those menbers of the 200 Club who do manage to visit Halsway Manor (especially those of us who only manage to visit occasionally), the replacement and renovation work, to which we help financially, will be much appreciated. As contributers to Friends of Halsway Manor, the care and attention with which funds are used reveal the dedication and time devoted to the upkeep of the Manor by many volunteers. |

First the sad news - Guildford Club were the founders of the 200 Club and we have recently lost two of the original members. However, new members have come forward since Christmas to keep our numbers up and as stated in the previous issue of the magazine, we hope further new members will come along for this 40th Anniversary Year. The Friends of Halsway Manor 200 Club was initiated at the end of 1988. In the 16 years that have elapsed, your membership has raised in excess of £16,000 for the Friends, and this also means that over £16,000 has been paid out in prize money. Some members have not shared in the prizes (their luck may change in future draws!), but I trust they have at least had the satisfaction of helping to preserve Halsway Manor as an important part of our national heritage. Comment: Alan Corkett (Editor - of Halsway Manor Magazine Vol 6 No 2 April 2005) In the year of our 40'n Anniversary, wouldn't it be great if we were actually able to make a stupendous effort and make this the 250 Club and raise more funds than ever before! We could even start thinking about the roof! BUY A BRICK - BUY A BRICK - BUY A BRICK - BUY A BRICK - BUY A BRICK We have large numbers of guests who think the world of this place and now is the time for all to give us some help. It really just cannot be left to the generous few. Recently, many have experienced being cold and we would love to insulate the fabric of the building, for example, to improve the warmth and the efficiency of the heating we pay for. So there is something that can help. Richard Stirling (member of council) has started a simple BUY A BRICK chart at the Manor where you can just donate £l or £l0 or more if possible. Currently the Mews are being repainted and re-carpeted, paid for by the Friends. Only another 18 rooms to go! |

The banking of Standing Orders has returned to normal. Inevitably the fracas with Lloyds TSB has meant that a few members have fallen by the wayside. Also sadly two long-standing members have passed away. However, with today’s membership now standing at 190 finding those additional 10 new members should be possible, particularly if I can ask existing members to persuade friends and fellow dancers/musicians to try their luck alongside our steadfast members, especially those who so much enjoy their visits to the Manor. For those with access to the Internet, there is an application form available on:- http:/website.lineone.net/~guildfordfolkdancers/halsway/forms.html Alternatively go to a search engine eg Google and type guildfordfolkdancers from there it is a simple matter to progress to the 200 Club and the application form (this avoids typing errors of the long website address). Thanks to all 200 Club members for their continued support of Halsway Manor. |

The Continuing Saga of Banker's Standing Orders Don't miss this episode - with a following wind and co-operation from the Lloyds TSB it may (I hope) be the last of this saga! We have reached our 200 - membership target, but with Lloyds TSB's persistence in torpedoing our efforts to collect your memberships by Standing Orders, we could struggle to maintain our numbers I believe 12 (twelve) members have had payments returned in Contra to their bank accounts during Dec 03/Jan 04 due to Lloyds TSB's incompetence. This means that the 200 Club is short of over £200 of expected funds over this period (some members have more than one share). because of the uncertainty of who may or may not have already asked their bank to change their Standing Order payable to our current account No. 2603810, Lloyds TSB have agreed to write to all members who have Standing Orders that pay to our old account numbers (07003613 and 7380720). Members will be requested to sign a new mandate enclosed with this letter (together with SAE). But please also make sure that the existing Standing Order is cancelled. It would be appreciated if those who have already taken action to provide a new mandate and cancel the old mandate, can advise Lloyds TSB (in the SAE provided) that they have already done so. This also means that I cannot include members in the draw for Jan/Feb 2004 that takes place in mid - March unless the money has been received into the 200 Club account. It may be necessary for members to pay by cheque for this year as banks appear unable to backdate payment of Bankers Orders> For those of you who have yet come across such a thing as a Contra, it will appear as a credit on your statement without explanation, around 4 - 7 days after the original outgoing debit to the 200 Club and is very easily missed by the account holder This saga has tried my patience (and probably yours too!) and suggests that perhaps I should just go away and have a nervous breakdown! |

Bankers Orders... Unfortunately, there are still a few Bankers Standing Orders being returned for credit to members’ accounts. We know that this is due to Lloyds TSB staff not doing as instructed on their computer screens, i.e. where a standing order is being made to our old account numbers their staff should as directed transfer the payment to our new account number. Now dare I say it - "you just cannot get the staff" - or perhaps it’s pressure of work, or just incompetence. If members can possibly take time to ask their Bank to change the payment details on their Standing Order, it would be greatly appreciated. If your Standing Order is being directed to either 07003613 or 7380760 please change Standing Order to 2603810 - Sort Code 30 - 90 - 09 Lloyds TSB. As mentioned in the August 2003 edition of the Magazine a £1000 donation was sent to the Friends of halsway Manor at the end of 2002 and our mid-year contribution was £300. We have been able to achieve this due to the support we continue to receive from the many longstanding members and new members who help to maintain a healthy bank account. We have sadly lost a few of our older members, but with new faces joining at the time of writing we have 198 potential winners in our bi-monthly draw. Results for the last two draws (May/June and July/August 2003) are as above. |
