Our interest in Scottish Country Dancing goes back to the time when our families used to dance at local social gatherings and on holidays. We grew up with a mixture of Scottish, English, American, Old Tyme and other forms of dance, all of which have influenced the music we play today. As a dance band, our repertoire has always included a good many Scottish tunes, but it was not until the year 2000, when we were invited to play for the Morland
Scottish Dance Week, that we started to play more regularly for Scottish Country Dancing. At that time the week was led by iconic dance teachers John Drewry and Jackie Johnstone, and it provided us with a wonderful opportunity to immerse ourselves in the Scottish idiom. We have been fortunate to play for this event as a family band for a number of years, our son Nick joining us on percussion from 2001. Since then we have played for Scottish Dance clubs up and down the country, making many new friends, and having a lot of fun along the way! This recording comes in response to frequent requests from both Scottish Dance enthusiasts and the many others who enjoy music in this style. ‘Crossing Borders’ reflects some of the different influences in our music - you will find Scottish, Irish, American and Canadian tunes, plus a few whose origins are lost in the mists of time. We have also included a number of our own tunes, recorded here for the first time - part of our small contribution to the living tradition. We have deliberately chosen sets of music which can be used when ‘any good tune’ is called for, and we hope that amongst them you may find some favourites - some old, and some new! So finally, thanks to everyone who has helped us on our journey so far, and we hope that you, like us, will enjoy ‘Crossing Borders’. |
