MONUMENTAL INSCRIPTIONS AT ELVETHAM, HAMPSHIRE
Inscriptions 1729-1957 in the churchyard of St. Mary

The church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, adjacent to Elvetham Hall, was built in 1840-41 on the site of an earlier church. Declared redundant in 1972, the building is now part of "The Elvetham" hotel and conference centre.
Monument No 1 is a large war memorial,
situated to the south east of the church.
Nos 2, 3, 4, 5 at the west end of the churchyard comprise the
Calthorpe family plot and vault.
No 6 is at the east wall of the church.
No 7 is a flat stone adjacent to the tower.
No 8 is a flat stone near the south wall of the churchyard.
No 9 has been taken up and leaned against the chancel wall.
The remainder of the stones have been moved from their original positions and placed against the perimeter wall of the churchyard; they have been recorded in a clockwise direction, starting at west.

daughter of FREDERICK 4th Baron CALTHORPE and of CHARLOTTE SOPHIA
his wife, who died May 18th 1887. This cross is erected by her
sorrowing sisters and brothers.

July 17th 1927.

8. WILLIAM SESSIONS, born February 27th 1794, baptized March 20th 1794, died January 16th 1885 in the 91st year of his age, For 62 years clerk of this church. He lived a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
