Introduction
The purpose of this compilation is to provide a master index to
some of the monumental inscriptions of North East Hampshire. For
each surname, a list of parish codes is given, indicating the
MI transcripts in which the surname occurs. The contents list
translates each code into a full transcript reference. Copies
of most transcripts are held by the Hampshire Record Office, the
Hampshire Genealogical Society, and the Society of Genealogists.
The Hampshire Genealogical Society offers a look-up service for
society members.
In addition to recently recorded monumental inscriptions, the index includes some church MIs from the series of church notes printed in Collectanea Topographica et Genealogica volumes 7 and 8 (1841,1843). Names occurring in the supplementary biographical notes in these volumes have also been indexed.
Compound Surnames, Surnames used as
Forenames
Compound (hyphenated) surnames are indexed under all elements
of the surname. Surnames used as forenames are indexed with the
parish code enclosed in brackets. In many cases, surnames used
as forenames are not included in the indexes to individual transcripts,
but an attempt has been made to search all transcripts for any
occurrences and include them in this master index.
Coverage of the Index
This edition of the index includes 32 churchyards situated in
25 ancient parishes and 6 modern parishes. The main omissions
in the immediate area are:
Ancient Parishes: Crondall, Eversley,
Hartley Wintney, Long Sutton, South Warnborough, Upton Grey, Yateley
Modern Parishes: Cove, Crookham,
Ewshot, Fleet (part recorded)
There is a separate index for Long Sutton.
