SPELLBINDING
PERFORMANCE FROM WIZARD.
Despite
a bitterly cold day at the Tregaron Spring meeting, there
were plenty of heart-warming performances.
Penhow
owner/trainer, Roy Sheedy had a spectacularly successful
day, sending out convincing winners of two of the three open
handicap heats. Wellfield Baroness made all to give Debbie
Wakefield her first winner of 2004, while the highly strung
Wellfield Winston used identical tactics with Huw Thomas.
Builth
Wells-based Lee Price was so cool on his drive of the
front-running Davy Crockett in the top grade heat that he
was almost hypothermic, winning cleverly from the
backmarkers, Free Contender (Colin Bevan) and the mighty
Fearless JR (Richard Owens), both signing their hoofprints
of power for the future.
Paul
Evans, from Pandy, started the campaign with a brace of
winners, partnering Joyce Morlidge’s Take Flight to spoil
Sara Morgans’ party with Ystwyth Flyer close home in the
Improver event. The Steve-Lees factor was evident as the
master-driver hurtled home with Marion Gittings-Watts’
Tinto Bambino, then later coaxed a winning run from Michelle
Jones’ early-breaking charge, Cardis DC.
Jason
Podmore had a frustrating day with a couple of his runners
just missing out on the glory, and the promising Magical
Star looked set to score when suffering interference on the
run-in in the first maiden race. However, justice was done
in the steward’s room where Magical Star was awarded the
race.
Henry
Bulman provided the trophy for the fastest maiden, and had
the pleasure of presenting it to Mahogany Duchess (Megan
Taff) whom he had bred.
The
pinnacle of the high-profile day was the nine runner Spring
Handicap Final. Stoneriggs Wizard had made the long journey
from County Cork in Ireland, a first visit for 31 year-old
trainer/driver, Tadhg Murphy. It certainly won’t be his
last. The partnership had to concede best to Wellfield
Winston in the heat, but took early control of the £1,000
Final and outgunned the opposition in electrifying style to
export the euros.
