On completion of the exercise, the aircraft was landing at RAF Manston when it struck a tree and crashed, immediately bursting into flame. The aircrew (Tollemache and an air gunner, LAC Smith) escaped but Sperling was trapped within the wreckage. Braving the intense heat and exploding small arms ammunition, Tollemache attempted to free Sperling by breaking through the forward hatch but his efforts were in vain. Sperling died and Tollemache was so severely burned that he became one of Sir Archibald McIndoe's "guinea pigs". For his gallantry, Tollemache was awarded the Empire Gallantry Medal, gazetted on 06 August 1940. Subsequently, on the institution of the George Cross, the EGM was revoked and all holders received the GC in substitution.].
