DAY 11 SUMMARY

No major climbs today as yesterday, but, today did have its own excitements. It all started after Middleton-in-Teesdale. From Middleton-in-Teesdale which is about 6 miles in from Baldersdale, you follow the river Tees all the way to Langdon Beck. About 5 miles from Middleton-in-Teesdale we came to our first real excitement of the day. Low force, a small but very powerful waterfall with indescribable force. If I didn't know better I would have thought this was going to be the most powerful waterfall I was going to see for the whole of this walk, but that is until 2 miles later, or should I say 1.5 miles later, as you can start to feel the ground shaking.

From this point where the ground vibrates we still had 10 minutes to walk before High force. Water here tumbles down 70 ft with at least 5 times more force than Low force. To be honest it is an indescribable sight, so powerful and large it is so wondrous. As the day was so hot and the water looked so refreshing we decided to wade out into the middle of the water about a mile before High force and have our lunch wedged in-between 2 large stones in the river. It was definitely a wedge into the rocks as the water here was flowing at about 7 knots instead of the usual 10 knots due to the rocks breaking up the flow. It was a great experience, and a bit of fun also. After that it was an enjoyable walk into Langdon Beck.

A MORE DETAILED LOOK AT DAY 11

Baldersdale hostel was once a farm house and it does still show plenty of signs that it was, even today. The hostel was opened in spring 1981, for the main purpose of Pennine Way walkers, other wise it makes it a long day to other accommodation.

The footpath takes you along the edge of the nature reserve reservoir before turning of on to meadows, rough pastures and semi-moor like land, which is fairly easy to walk on. The route it hardly ever flat and is always going up and down. However for once the average is down hill but that is not without a gentle but long up hill section. This is the case all the way to Middleton-in-Teesdale.

Middleton-in-Teesdale does offer a good place to stop and rest and increase your energy supplies, not that you will be in any real need of much energy for he rest of the day. All you will need is a love for waterfalls and fast flowing rivers.

From Middleton-in-Teesdale you will be following a soft and fairly shaded footpath all the way from here. The first thing along the river that we come to which is of any real interest is about half a mile from Low force or about 5 miles from Middeton-in-Teesdale. Here there are a lot of stones sticking up out of the water that makes the river froth. These rocks continue for about 200 metres. If you are a good canoeist then this is a great place to test out your white water skills.

Low force is now coming up and is in any condition it is a beautiful sight. The force of the water is huge as the water tumbles over 20 ft. However, this fall is nothing compared to its great big brother High force. This fall is coming soon about 2 miles later. If you are a strong swimmer you can, at your own risk, go along the path to about the half way point between Low and High force. At this location some large rocks are in the middle of the river, and if you can reach them they are a good place to cool off if the day is hot and even have lunch.

High force is so large that you know when you are approaching it. The ground rumbles about half a mile away from it.

When you get to see it, the shock of the beauty of the falls, can make you go weak in the knees. If this is the first time you have seen a large waterfall, the power of it with make you take a step back. The awesome sight is made up even more, because the cliff face goes directly down vertical and all you can see is the water tumbling and churning below you and in front of you a torrent of white, churned up water. The track continues for another 2 miles as it comes in to Langdon Beck. Langdon Beck, is a small but attractive town, with excellent sights and beauty.
