James 109 the Miller

James 109 was born in East Ruston and was working as a miller at Roughton when he married Sarah Savory in Overstrand in 1830, a woman nearly 18 years his junior. Here they started their family Mary Ann 1141 ( b  1830 ) and John 437( b  1831 ),  then returned to the East Ruston area, where a further four children were born: James 130 ( b Honing 1835 ), Elizabeth 131( b Dilham 1839 ), William 191( b Dilham 1841 ) and Sarah Maria 132( b Dilham 1845 ).

James was a miller in and around Dilham for most of his life. By 1841 he employed a servant and by 1851 he had become a ‘master miller’, probably working on Mill Common, and involved in  business with the Dilham and North Walsham Canal. Their children settled in various areas:

James 130 left Norfolk in the 1860s settled near Guisborough, where he found employment in the local iron-stone industry.

John 437 was a journeyman miller lodging at Elsing on the River Wensum in 1851,. He then worked in the corn mills serving the Navy at Gosport but by 1858 had settled with his family at Costessey, where he became tenant at the village’s Eastwood Mill. Here he remained until 1890, falling trade caused him to move for a while to the water mill down in the valley. John was assisted in the business by his son John Thomas ( b Norwich 1858 ) and son-in-law Walter RUMP ( b Dilham 1851 ).

William 191 married at Dilham in 1865, had children born at Hemsby and Stalham before finally settling as a journeyman miller on Cobholm Island, Great Yarmouth, His son William Harvey 1136( b Dilham 1864 ) also entered the trade and was milling at Cobholm in 1881 and also 1901.
