In divison 2 Ilkley A
are keeping the momentum going with a win at Undercliffe
C, even though 2 of their regulars were missing.
Bradford Destoyers only turned out 4 players , but
still managed to beat keighley 3 1/2 - 2 1/2 and boosted
their boards for to 4 1/2 fot the season. Fot the
2nd week running Bingley Bees won by 3 1/2 - 2 1/2.
Winston Williams and Adam lang will take some
stopping. S. Bradford B being the unlucky opponents
on this occasion. Clayton beat Ilkley B by 5 - 1 to
take over their position at 2nd. The games were
closer than the scoreline suggests.
3 Oct 06
Division 2 is headed
by Ilkley A, with their B team atop the 3 pointers.
Keighley narrowly lost at Ilkley. S. Bradford
B put up a good fight before going down 4 - 2 at
Clayton. Graham Sutcliffe's early win was soon
cancelled out by young Chris Wilks victory on board
5. Les Johnson won on the top board, with Stuart
Swire having to settle for a draw in the battle of the
newcomers (!) against Luke Adcock. This left
Clayton one up with two to finish. Steve Brown
(White) had a Knight and four connected pawns
against Angel Gonzalez's black Bishop and 2 pawns.
Angel managed to lure Steve's Knight to the Queen side
before advancing his pawn to a4, then managing to sneak
round the back of the pawn chain, which were all on black
squares allowing him to queen. Although a pawn to
the good Chris Edwards couldn't find a win in a blitz
finish against the resolute Keith Brack.
19 Sept 06
Bingley Bees appear to
have a strong line-up and opened with a thrilling
3-3 draw against Clayton. Winston Williams setting
the ball rolling with a quick win against Richard
Bowman. Angel Gonzalez soon replying in the Spanish
battle against Rafael Ortega. Les Johnson couldn't
turn a 2 pawn advantage into a win against a battling and
fastly improving Adam Lang. On board 3, although the
exchange up Dave Colledge couldn't get past George
Slater's bishop and pawn defence. Andy Ellson
managed to gain a win on time against Graham Sutcliffe,
but probably had a positional advantage in any
case. This brought it all down to the game between
John Madden and Chris Edwards. A win necessary to
salvage Clayton a point. John was 2 pawns up, but
his King was quite open. Both players managed to
just reach the time control. Chris with one minute
left, John with less than that. With all other team
members watching the pressure was really on.
In the end Chris managed to take advantage of John's King
side weakness and secure the necessary victory.
