Grading is perhaps one of the most
contentious aspects of chess organisation at "grass roots" level. In most team competitions players are required or
expected to be nominated in order of strength. Most
amateur chess congresses have entry to most of their sections limited to players below a
certain specified playing strength. A number
of other competitions, team and individual, rely to some extent on the existence of a
means of quantifying players' relative playing strengths.
