Caio Tour - Dolaucothi gold mines
Explore the fascinating history of the Dolaucothi gold Mines,
first opened by the Romans 2,000 years ago and worked with the slaves held
in barracks at Caio. The Roman encampment was half a mile away at Pumsaint
where the Dolaucothi Hotel now stands and it was in the furnaces at Pumsaint
that the ore from the mines was processed. A variety of walks offer splendid
views across the estate and for added enjoyment wear a
miner's
helmet and lamp for a guided tour of the 1930's underground workings. The
mines are owned by the National Trust and open daily from 20 May to 12 September
from 10am-5pm.
