"As the key’s turn set the 1.7-litre engine spinning, there was no ignoring the feeling of impending fun in the ‘new’ Ford Puma. A short slide into first with the aluminium-topped gearstick, a smooth release of the clutch balanced with a studied feed-in of revs and I was away.

Yep, the car felt the same as I’d remembered it. Fast, tactile steering. Agile, lively suspension. And this one came in a beautiful purpley blue. Even though I remain unswayed by its looks, the way the Puma drives still makes it one of the best ways to spend £14,950 on a car. The gearchange is sweet enough to rot your teeth and the engine, though not ultimately that powerful, revs happily and serves up its 123bhp with the kind of fun you normally find in fairground rides. And, if you feel like you need to stop the waltzer, disc brakes on the front and drums on the rear pull up the car with ABS-enhanced efficiency.

So why is Top Gear testing this Puma in particular? Well, we felt that you, the reader, needed to know of some revisions that have gone on inside the car: the warning lights are in a different place and the front seats have changed. Umm, that’s it.

Instead of being in a line at the bottom of the dash, those warning lights are now dotted around in the white dials. And the indicator dash lights look different too. They’re triangular. The kind of sharp triangles that are so popular with Ford’s designers these days. Maybe they should stop eating so much Toblerone. And they stick out from either side of the central speedo dial at ten o’clock and two o’clock, like the ears of a bedraggled cat.

One of the few gripes heard about the original Puma was that the seating position was a bit on the high side, even when on its lowest setting. This has been improved, slightly. The bottom cushion can now have its angle changed and gone is the electrical height adjuster – so a thinner seat base can be used. The rest of the car, from the wheels to the engine, remains thankfully unmucked-about-with.

So, we at the mag can now sleep easy in our beds, knowing you are fully up to speed with the changes in this fast-moving world of motor manufacturing. And you thought we got this car in just for the fun of driving it. The very idea."

"It's chucking it down in the hills of southern Germany and hardly perfect weather for testing a new car. But Ford's Puma sports coupe is lapping up the soaking roads, its sporty tyres clawing onto the glistening Tarmac.

Another downhill S-bend arrives, but by now it's clear there's no need to brake. Ease off the sensitive accelerator, let the car roll through the curves inch-perfect despite atrocious conditions, and accelerate like a scalded, er, Puma, out the other side.

It's hard to believe this is an ordinary mass-production Ford, not an RS Cosworth. Well, not that mass. Only 5000 a year are scheduled for the UK, and they'll only be available through 155 special dealers instead of the whole Blue Oval network.

Limited availability? First class handling? Wait, there's more…

Puma is a ball to drive. Razor-sharp handling is coupled with fantastic performance, thanks to a free-revving 125bhp engine, with variable cam timing - a first for a production car. 'VCT' means it pulls strongly through the rev range but achieves an excellent average fuel consumption of 38.2mpg.

You can hear it go, too. Sporty exhausts are illegal these days, so Ford has 'tuned' the engine induction roar to give an edgy growl at mid revs and an urgent snarl higher up. Coupled with a short throw gearshift and close ratio cogs, it's a joy to work the Puma's box and engine hard. Air-con is a £350 option - worthwhile as no sunroof is available because of a rollover beam in the roof."
