Hi there

My name is Chris Baldock, I married George Baldock whose father Tom was the nephew of Teddy Baldock, his father was Freddy Baldock, Tom had brothers and sisters, Joey, Milly, Dolly, Florry and Bert who was adopted. Tom lived in Dagenham until he died in 1994,

His wife's name was Rose, unfortunately she died at the age of 56. They came from Islington and were moved to Dagenham when that part of London was demolished in the slum clearance. Most of the others moved to Poplar.

Unfortunately the only one now living is Dolly and after speaking to her about Teddy and what she remembers of him, she said that being the youngest of nine children, and being evacuated during the war, she only remembers his name being mentioned a couple of times, but she does recall going to Battersea Park when they had the fair there and hearing comments about the boxing matches that were going on and about a boxer that was winning all the matches, and that they were probably fixed because the winner was an ex-champion boxer, she thinks that that was probably Teddy! It is very peculiar that Tom was living in Dagenham all those years and never knew that his uncle was in Romford. We were told about Teddy by Tom but were given the impression that he had been dead for a lot of years. We wonder whether Teddy moved away from the family when he became rich and famous, not wanting to know people that at that time were living in virtual poverty. I know this sounds very heartless, but these things happened back in those days.

Our son, who lives in Spain was asked by someone whether he was related to Teddy Baldock, the boxer, he said he was but did not know anything about him, this person was quite surprised that our son did not know anything as Teddy was famous in his day.

We would be interested to hear more about his life in the interevening years and perhaps you could get in touch directly with George and Alan and possibly Dolly as there are not a lot of them left now. This computer and e-mail address belong to our daughter as George and I now live in Spain and are only here for a short holiday.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Chris
