In the beginning....................

I am trying to create a website to share with people across the world.   To let you know that anyone can be creative, to discover the talents within each and every one of us, even though they may be latent.  When the above photograph was taken, I thought that my only talent was that of piano playing, and even that was a struggle.

I had always wanted to be artistic, and I was more than a little interested in Faberge eggs - the history of it, the craft and skill required.

Naturally, all of you who are egg shell artists will know the history of Peter Carl Faberge, and will be aware of the importance of exchanging eggs at Easter within the Russian Orthodox Church.  This tradition made Faberge's name known world wide, when an egg was hand delivered to the Palace of the Czar each year, regardless of the depression in the Country at the time. Of course, these eggs were made of precious metals and took many months to create by Faberge's skilled artisans.  They are also priceless.  However, should we.. as aspiring artists, appreciate the fact that the art of egg craft is priceless in itself, then we must continue the tradition.

The eggs you will see on this site are made from real shells, mainly goose eggs, but also Rhea, Emu and Ostrich.  The Rhea shell is larger than goose, but wonderful to work on.  The Emu shell has the most beautiful natural colouring, and has three layers of varying colours.  Deep green outer shell, then blue and finally white.  The smaller the shell, the more delicate it is to cut.

The following pages will show you the different techniques of egg craft, from enamelling to intricate filigree work.

'Getting ahead in a difficult profession requires avid faith in yourself.  That is why some people with mediocre talent, but with great inner drive, go much further than people with vastly superior talent.'
