DOUGLAS FIT FOR IBROX

Jocky Scott is hopeful of having virtually a full squad to pick from when he tries to spoil Rangers’ championship party on Sunday .

Only Shaun McSkimming is definitely out for the visit to the newly-crowned champions and, while he has a few names on the doubtful list, Jocky does not envisage any selection problems.

"There are one or two with strains and minor knocks, but at the moment it looks like they are all going to recover in time,’’ he said.

After three games last week, the first team were given another day off this week to make sure there are no signs of tiredness come Sunday."

"As well as giving them an extra day off this week, we have monitored them closely in training to make sure no one has been pushed too hard,’’ added Jocky."

DERBY TICKETS SELLING FAST

South Enclosure tickets for the derby on May 6th are selling fast and if fans want to take advantage of the £5 (£1 concession) deal then we advise them to get their tickets today rather than risk being disappointed.

Tickets are also available for the Main Stand at £15 (£5 concession) and a few are also available for the Bobby Cox Stand £13.

Meanwhile the Arabs are reportedly struggling to sell the allocation for the Shankly, never mind the section of the Main Stand.

TEAM TO BE BUILT AROUND WILKIE

Scotland under 21 boss Alex Smith heaped praise on Lee Wilkie after the Scots youngsters played Holland on Tuesday evening. Lee was winning his fourth cap at this level - and Smith said "Looking at Lee Wilkie's display last night I feel I can now build a team around him. "He was absolutely outstanding. He's a player who uses the ball exceptionally well for a centre-back and who is learning to command the penalty area with his height.

Dundee gained a 0-0 draw at Pittodrie in the under 21 league on Monday afternoon. The kick off was delayed for 20 minutes following the late arrival of the Dees due to an accident on the road north and they then had to weather early Aberdeen pressure.

In ten minutes Derek Soutar had to get down well to block a close range drive from Rutkiewicz and the young Dons striker came even nearer to netting just a minute later when his looping header clipped the top of the bar with Soutar beaten.

Nicky Banger was causing the home defence problems but without any end result and it was the half hour before Dundee really looked like breaking the deadlock, Forbes through ball finding Barry Elliot racing away to fire in a vicious twenty yarder which dipped inches over. Forbes went off two minutes later having earlier picked up a knock with Graham Thomson coming off the bench to replace him.

Barry Elliot was again involved in Dundee's next opening on 36 minutes when hew was bundled over just outside the box and John Elliot stepped up to curl the free kick onto the post with Preece scrambling across the goal in vain.

Dundee were well on top as the interval approached, and the impressive Chris Coyne struck woodwork as well a couple of minutes before the interval when his header came off the bar.

The early part of the second half saw Dundee continue to hold the initiative. Martin Hugo Prest came on for Barry Elliot five minutes into the period but it was Banger who continued look the most likely to make something happen. He came close to breaking the deadlock in 55 minutes when a twist and turn inside the box was followed by a rasping shot which Preece did well to push away.

Graham Bayne was next to try his luck with a couple of powerful drives from distance, one held by Preece and the other soaring over the bar.

Aberdeen replaced Rutkiewicz with Darren Mackie midway through the half and began to exert more pressure on the Dundee back line. With ten minutes to go the substitute fired in a twenty yarder, which looked to be heading for the top corner until Soutar turned it round the post.

Back came Dundee and John Elliot was close with a shot from the edge of the box which whistled just wide of the post.

It was the home side who looked more likely to score now and Soutar again did well to deny Mackie as the game went into the final moments.

In the end a draw was a fair result with neither side really doing enough to win the match. Nicky Banger looked the most dangerous player on the field throughout while John Elliot was the other Dee to impress in an attacking sense. At the back Chris Coyne was immaculate throughout and looks a very good addition to the staff.

DOUGLAS OUT OF SCOTLAND SQUAD

Robert Douglas has been forced to withdraw from the Scotland squad to face Holland on wednesday due to Tonsalitis.

MARR HINTS AT SCHUSTER

Peter Marr hinted strongly in a radio interview on Saturday that Jocky Scott's future at Dens Park is coming to an end.

The Dundee chief executive said he had two or three replacement candidates in mind.

Asked about the possibility of former German superstar Bernd Schuster arriving during the summer, Marr said: "Schuster is an individual of some pedigree. I was not going to mention names but we must be interested in people of that calibre.

"We also realise that guys like that do not come cheaply, but we must aim high. Jocky has done a good job in getting us to where we are just now.

"However, we are ready for the next step up." Schuster admitted he's ready for talks when the call comes.

SHOCKING SAYS JOCKY

Jocky Scott continued to refuse to talk about his future, then blasted the players for their performance against Kilmarnock on Saturday.

Dundee went down as the home form slump continued, and after the game, he said: "I changed the two strikers at the halfway stage, but to be honest there were a few of the players who could have suffered the same fate in what was an afternoon of disappointment."

But with the threat of relegation now gone, and with nothing to look forward to for the players and supporters, it's easy to see why the game had that end of season feel about it.

SAT 22ND APRIL

DEES AIM TO TURN ON THE STYLE

Everyone knows we have got guts and give 110 per cent every week but what most people seem to forget is that we can also play a bit too.

Draws with Hearts and Celtic and wins over Motherwell and Aberdeen have pulled the Dens men clear of the scrap at the bottom of the table and now the team are on a mission to entertain.

Steven Boyack reckons the final five games will give them the opportunity to show the fans what they're really capable of.

We take on second-bottom Kilmarnock this afternoon looking for only the third home league win of the season.

Boyack said: "To get up the league you can't just rely on a good team spirit and in the next five games we'll be aiming to keep picking up points and play some half-decent football.

"At times during the season we've had to dig in and play five at the back or contain teams and play on the break but now that it looks like we're safe it would be great to play some decent passing football.

"We've got some talented players at the club. Willie Falconer has been excellent all season and in big Rab Douglas we've got one of the best goalkeepers in the country.

"In midfield myself, Gavin Rae and Pat Billio all like to play football and in the few games he's played Franscisco Luna has shown great ability up front.

"Maybe we don't get credit for it but that's something you get used to at Dundee.

"But what we have is a bunch of boys who don't like to be beaten. When we lose nobody walks away thinking we were unlucky. When it happens we're all gutted."

The 23-year-old and his team-mates are anxious to give the fans something to cheer today to make up for their scrappy home form.

Boyack added: "It's great to win and that's the most important thing, but it's nice to do it by playing good football. I know that myself and the midfield players like to play passing football.

"Our home record hasn't been that great anyway so it would be nice to entertain our fans. "

"We've been down at the bottom for most of the season and now that we've come up and put a bit of a run together I hope the supporters can enjoy themselves."

Although the Dark Blues are safe from relegation Boyack feels they've still got plenty to play for.

He said: "We've still to play Dundee United and I think that game will have a big influence on where both sides finish in the league. "

"The derby is never a meaningless game, no matter when you play it. If we can beat teams around us we'll give ourselves every chance of finishing above them. "

"Some of the best games I've played for Dundee came at the tail end of last season when we'd got ourselves safe. It's definitely easier to play when you're up the table a little bit than it is at the bottom. "

"Aberdeen have taken all the stick this season but for a while we weren't too far away from them. "

"It's difficult when you are always playing with a bit of fear about what's going to happen. Hopefully now that we've opened up a bit of a gap we can relax a bit and play the way we want to play."

"WE AIM FOR 5TH"

Skipper Barry Smith has warned Hibernian and Dundee United that the Dark Blues will not be taking their foot off the pedal now that they have made safe their SPL place.

Boss Jocky Scott has set his sights on emulating last season’s top-five finish-the achieving of that target requiring the leap-frogging of both Hibs and United-and according to Smith the players are right behind him in that and in his hopes for a personal future at the club.

"There are 15 points left to play for and we won’t be easing up," pledged Smith, as he looked ahead to the visit of Kilmarnock today.

"We’ve done well over the past three or four games and we aim to maintain that form and finish as far up the table as possible.

"Once again we have shown our ability to rise to the challenge when confronted by adversity and although as players we have tried not to become involved in the situation surrounding the manager, it is a fact we have a great rapport with him and want that to continue."

"It would be nice to take maximum points from the games we have left here and there is no point in thinking it is beyond us to do just that."

"I think part of the problem we have had at home is that there is a bit of pressure from the fans who understandably want us to do well and in response we feel the need to attack, attack, attack, which isn’t always the best way to go about things."

"But we won our last game here against Motherwell and we want a repeat against Kilmarnock to ensure we are chasing a hat-trick when United come here for the derby in a fortnight’s time.

"They have beaten us three times this season and we will be looking to get something back. With that in mind we would prefer to be going into that match with another home win under our belts."

As reported yesterday the Dark Blues name the same squad as for the midweek victory over the Sheep, with the exception of the suspended James Grady. Gavin Rae is feeling better than he was but is still rated doubtful, while Shaun McSkimming is ruled out.

Manager Scott, looking ahead to the Killie clash, said, "This is an important game for us. If we win then depending on results elsewhere we can jump up the league.

"We have managed to move ourselves closer to the teams above us and if we can keep climbing it will be an interesting end to the season.

"With ourselves and United swapping places a couple of times this week, that adds interest to the local scene too."

FRI 21ST APRIL

DEES AND DONS FALL OUT

Dundee and Aberdeen have fallen out over an article contained in the match programme for Tuesday night’s meeting of the sides.

The offending item was extremely critical of the Dark Blues’ recent treatment of manager Jocky Scott and that incensed the Dens Park hierarchy, who have formally complained both to Aberdeen and the SPL.

The author of the piece made clear his admiration for the job done by Scott and the recent efforts of his playing staff but went on to attack the board’s behaviour towards their manager, saying, "Quite what the men who own Dundee think they are playing at beggars belief. An endless queue of new faces arriving without having been vetted by the man in charge of football affairs is a nonsense.

"What the current squad, seeing men drafted in who are likely to do them out of a job, must think is anyone’s guess but they deserve enormous credit for the way they have got on with the task in hand.

"I, for one, applaud the manager and his players for their efforts. I hope the board don’t have the sheer affrontery to claim any credit for their achievements."

A Dens spokesman said yesterday, "We can confirm that the club was disappointed with the content of an article that appeared in the Aberdeen programme on Tuesday evening and that we expressed our disappointment over the comments to both the SPL and the Pittodrie board."

It is understood Dons chief executive Gordon Bennett, in responding to a letter from Dens director Jim Connor, apologised for any offence that had been caused.

However, while Aberdeen will, in the match programme for tomorrow’s visit by Motherwell, seek to distance themselves from the content of the article in question by issuing a general disclaimer, they will not be issuing a public apology as such.

"The views expressed in the article were those of a freelance contributor and we will make clear in our next programme that any views expressed by freelance contributors in our programme are not necessarily those of Aberdeen FC," said a spokesman. Whether the SPL choose to step into the row remains to be seen.

WELL DONE - BUT CAN DO BETTER

Jocky Scott has delivered a "done well but capable of even better" verdict on the improved recent form of centre-half Lee Wilkie.

The under-21 internationalist followed up decent showings against Motherwell and Celtic with a generally first-rate display at Pittodrie. This was acknowledged yesterday by his manager, although Scott also pointed out that the player remains hindered by a casual streak.

"Lee has, for the last three matches, done really well and that has been pleasing to see."

"The experience he has gained this season will have done him the world of good and his emergence shows we must be doing something right here if we can bring youngsters through and play them in a league which, because of its competitiveness and fear-ridden environment, isn’t really suited to kids. However, for as good as his performance against Aberdeen was, Lee still suffered from lapses in concentration and he has to get that out of his game."

McSKIMMING OUT

Shaun McSkimming has already been ruled out, although fears he might be finished for the season may prove to be unfounded.

"A scan has shown that the injury to his Achilles tendon is not as bad as he thought it was but it will still be a wee while before Shaun can return," revealed Scott.

"Shaun heard a popping sound against Celtic and feared he had severed the tendon but it turns out the damage isn’t as severe as that and a combination of rest and treatment should provide a cure."

RAE DOUBTFUL

Gavin Rae, who missed his first game of the season against Aberdeen is still causing concern with regard to tomorrow’s home clash with Kilmarnock.

The player has been suffering with a back strain, and according to manager Jocky Scott, will not be rushed back into the side unless he has fully recovered.

Scott said: "His condition will be monitored and if he is okay, only then will he return to the squad. He is a guy who has played a lot of football this season so it could be a wee break would be good for him."

THU 20TH APRIL

BETTING CASH BOOST

Scottish clubs are set to get a six-figure award from a sponsorship deal brokered by the SPL to allow betting on-line.

Freeserve and the SPL have agreed the terms to allow gambling on SPL clubs over the internet, and we understand that deal amounts to a whopping £1million, to be shared equally between the SPL clubs, meaning around £100,000 each - less a commission to the SPL offices.

But another more sinister agreement will be reached in a couple of years when the current television deals are over.

At present, the SPL get £50 million, which, according to Roger Mitchell, will be doubled next time around. But the Old Firm want to negotiate their own pay-per-view rights, which could dilute any other deal.

Many will be advising those clubs that have to play Celtic or Rangers that they can't have those rights to themselves and should demand half of any cash raised. The Old Firm need the other clubs otherwise they won't have anybody to play against. It's time for tough talking.

WED 19TH APRIL

JOCKY DEE-LIGHTED

A delighted Scott speaking to the media after last nights game, said: "It's a great result for us. It puts a lot of daylight between ourselves and Aberdeen and that is very important to this club. I thought our performance was very nervy but we're now looking forward to the last five games. I think we can relax a bit now. The draw against Celtic on Saturday was also great for us because we went to Pittodrie last night with a great deal of confidence. And it's also the first time this season we've been ahead of Dundee United. That's a very big thing in this city and something we're delighted with."

TUE 18TH APRIL

STRIKERS TO RETURN

Jocky Scott can call on the services of suspended strikers Eddie Annand and Willie Falconer for the trip to Pittodrie tonight.

Dundee are hoping to build on their performance against Celtic at Parkhead on Saturday and Scott may be considering using the same eleven who battled so hard to snatch a 2-2 draw against the Tims.

Although he was giving nothing away, Scott said: "I will certainly be making one or two changes to the line-up. With our playing three times in a week I was always going to use the full squad and as a lot of the lads were tired on Saturday fresh legs are required for sure."

Fransisco Luna would be disappointed to be dropped, but Falconer is in such good form he may be used to partner him up front as Dundee go for the win, although a share of the points would certainly suit them.

LUNA WATCHED

Fransisco Luna was watched by several English scouts as he turned on the style at Parkhead on Saturday.

Dundee have confirmed the player is not the subject of any offers at the moment, but are keen to hold on to him.

As for Luna, he was outstanding at times in Glasgow, showing not only great skills, but an aggressiveness that almost boiled over when he and Celtic's Norwegian defender Vidar Riseth got involved, much to the anger of the Celtic supporters in the main stand.

But they quickly kissed and made up, and Luna was certainly this reporters man-of-the-match.

After his impressive performance, we understand clubs such as Nottingham Forest and Burnley will send their Scottish scouts to watch him against Aberdeen to see of Saturday's impressive performance was a one-off or not.

JOCKY IGNORES THE HYPE

Manager Jocky Scott insisted today's result was more important to his side than Rangers winning the league at Tannadice.

That could happen should Dundee cause an upset at Parkhead today and Rangers win at Tannadice, results that would certainly see the Dundee fans in double celebration mood.

Scott said: "The two games at the weekend may certainly be the focus of attention for the rest of the country. But the matches which matter to us are the two coming up immediately after we have been to Parkhead. They are against the teams down at the bottom alongside us and that presents us with a great opportunity to put ourselves clear of any play-off situation which may develop."

Steven Tweed has returned to training after a throat infection, but Scott may not risk him. Sean McSkimming is added to the squad.

TWEED TO RETURN

Defender Steven Tweed is set to return to Dens Park after a nasty throat infection.

The former Hibs defender has been missing for the past few days, and is such a key player for Jocky Scott's side that the manager has been keeping a daily check on his progress.

He had been told by the club medics not to return to Dens until it had totally cleared up, such was the fear he could infect the rest of the squad.

The manager said: "I would be delighted to see the player back here as soon as possible. You have to be realistic about things and if a player isn't involved a couple of days before a game then he is going to be doubtful."

Sean McSkimming is available for the trip to Glasgow after missing the last three matches.

WED 12TH APRIL

JOCKY BLAST AT BANGER

Nicky Banger was blasted by manager Jocky Scott for getting his 3rd red card since his arrival at Dens Park a few short months ago.

The player, who was signed from Oxford United in November of last year, was sent-of for two bookable offences in the match at Easter Road in the under-21's, brought the wrath of Scott down upon him.

Scott said: "It was just sheer stupidity on the part of the player to get himself involved like this once again.

"He arrived here short of match fitness and we have been working on that in the hope he would be able to play a part for the first team before the end of the season.

"We have three successive home games to round off with and it would be useful to have a winger around on these occasions. Now he will miss one more game and that will not help our efforts to get him sharp."

McSKIMMING BACK

Sean McSkimming came through Monday's under-21 game against Hibs to put himself back with a shout of a first team recall. The former Kilmarnock and Motherwell star has missed Dundee's last three games though injury, and he played for the whole 90 minutes and we understand hasn't suffered any reaction afterwards.

Jocky Scott now has to decide whether to recall him for the trip to Parkhead on Saturday, where he's without suspended strikers James Grady and Willie Falconer.

Midfielder Gavin Rae has returned to training again after suffering with flu, but central defender Steve Tweed is still receiving treatment after missing Saturday's match with Motherwell.

TUE 11TH APRIL

GRADY GETS 2 GAME BAN

The SFA have confirmed that James Grady will receive a two-match suspension following his red-card against Motherwell at the weekend. The player automatically misses Saturday's visit to Parkhead to face Celtic, and will then miss the relegation battle against Kilmarnock a week later. But we understands that he can play in next Tuesday's rearranged match against Aberdeen at Pittodrie.
The player gets a one-game ban for a red-card, but we understand his points tally has now gone through the disciplinary points limit and that's why he's been handed his extra suspension.

JOCKY CONFIDENT

Jocky Scott remained upbeat about the club's chances of remaining in the SPL as Steve Archibald again said he's not interested in his job.
Scott said: "We have now collected four points out of six and hopefully the fact we got a victory on Saturday will give us confidence for the remaining four games at home.
"I would assume Saturday's game was the most shot's we got on target in any one game. It is also the most goals we have scored in any game in the league.
"But it wasn't just the goals, I felt the whole second-half performance was good. Saturday was great because it gave the supporters something to shout about. Having the fans in the south enclosure made a real difference to the atmosphere."

Nicky Banger picked up the third red card of his short Dundee career as the under 21s gained a useful point at Easter Road. In fact the Dark Blue youngsters had to play for the whole second half with ten men after Banger was dismissed for a second bookable offence. Booked earlier for kicking the ball away after conceding a free kick he was sent off when he clashed with Dirk Lehamnn after 43 minutes.

Before this Banger had missed Dundee's best opportunity when Campbell saved with ease. Hibs most dangerous player was Lehmann who had a trio of chances in the first period. Chris Coyne coming to the rescue in twelve minutes when his tackle stopped the marksman. Jamie Langfield also denied Lehmann and the German had another near miss when his header dipped inches over the bar.

Down to ten men at the interval it was only to be expected that Hibs would throw everything at The Dees' defence and so it proved, but the Dundee back line held firm to deny the league leaders.

Shaun McSkimming was along with Mesas and Banger an over age player in the match and he didn't appear to have any problems with his hamstring injury as he completed the ninety minutes

SAT 8TH APRIL

NEWEST SIGNINGS NOT CONSIDERED

There will be no early taste of first-team football for the second wave of signings foisted on Jocky Scott.

That emerged yesterday after Scott and the Dark Blues directors responsible for bringing Barry Elliot, Martin Prest and Chris Coyne to Dens caught their first sight of the trio in the under-21 defeat by Hearts.

"It would be wrong to judge these players on the evidence of one game," said Scott, "They’ll need a few matches before I can form an opinion as to their abilities.

"Fortunately all three are eligible for the under 21s and we have seven or eight games at that level remaining this season which means they’ll have the opportunity to show their capabilities."

Elliot, Prest and Coyne will next figure against Hibs at Easter Road on Monday and then Aberdeen (h) on Thursday.

An immediate diet of under 21 action is also on the menu for comeback striker Nicky Banger.

"What the game against Hearts showed in Nicky’s case was that we’ll have to persevere with him in training and build him back up gradually," said Scott.

FANS PLEA FOR PEACE

The Dundee FC Supporters Association called for peace at Dens Park - for the time being at least. Association chairman Norrie Price reminded everyone at the club there is still the outside chance of a play-off for promotion and relegation next season and that all efforts should be focussed on the team's performance between now and the end of the season. He said last night: "Everyone has had their say on this subject and for the good of the club, let's put this to bed until the end of the season."

He thinks the manager and directors should have it sorted out sooner, and added: "Speaking personally I can see both points of view. The club feeling they want to review things at the end of the season is understandable. People accept when a manager is at the end of his contract, the club has the right to look at this. But I think you have to show respect to the manager and perhaps this issue should have been handled better." He also welcomed the new signings.

3 AMIGOS IN SQUAD

Spaniards Javier Artero, Jose Mesas and Francisco Luna will all be in the squad to face Motherwell tomorrow, a match which top scorer Willie Falconer misses through injury.

Scott backed his players to leave behind them the row that has engulfed the club for the past week when they take the field against Well.

"They realise the situation that’s there at the moment but they are getting on with their job which is, as mine is, to ensure we pick up as many points as possible," he said.

"But it won’t be an easy game against Motherwell in spite of their losing 4-0 to Celtic last night. Let’s face it, they are hardly the first team to have a bad result at Parkhead and they do boast a good away record."

Meanwhile, the three Danish players who were due at Dens this week won’t now arrive until the middle of next week when they are expected to look round the club and the city of Dundee with a view to signing for next season.

TUE 4TH APRIL

DUNDEE BOARD MAKES STATEMENT

Dundee have confirmed that under-pressure manager Jocky Scott is staying at the club - until the end of his contract at least.

Speculation has been rife that the club were planning to axe Scott and went behind his back to bring in a clutch of foreign stars.

Board member Jim Connor admitted that the Dundee hierarchy had brought in the players without Scott's knowledge - leading to accusations that they were undermining the manager.

But in a statement the club have assured Scott that he will be staying until the end of the season and will see out his contract which runs out on July 9 - although they insist they have no intention of bringing Steve Archibald in as a replacement. However, the club failed to clear up the uncertainty and deny that Scott would be replaced by a new manager in the summer.

The statement said: "Steve Archibald is not a candidate for the post of manager, nor will he be considerable as one in the future.

"Jocky Scott will remain manager of Dundee Football Club for the rest of the season and at least until July 9 2000 when his present contract with the club expires.

"As the club has indicated on several previous occasions, no decision has yet been taken regarding the manager's post for season 2000/2001. Nor will one be taken until the board has fulfilled its responsibilities to give full and proper consideration to all possible options.

"It is important to stress that the board is retaining a very open mind on these options.

"The board will give the matter its full attention in the days and weeks ahead and is anxious to resolve this matter and put an end to speculation."

"The board has a legal duty to act in what it believes to be the best interests of Dundee Football Club at all times.

"This includes fulfilling its contractual obligations and giving due weight and consideration to all possible options.

"The board will not be rushed into making a decision on these matters nor will it be influenced by media speculation or comment.

"The board has today re-iterated its position in discussions with Jocky Scott and Jimmy Bone and offered them assurances that they will be the first to be informed immediately after a decision has been reached.

"Although these contracts do not expire until July 9 2000 the board has agreed with them an earlier date by which a decision will be reached."

The Dundee board have also encouraged the out-of-contract players at the club to come forward to discuss new deals.

The statement added: "The board also met with club captain Barry Smith to reiterate its position regarding players out of contract and has offered to meet with individual players as requested.

"The board is grateful for the frank and open way in which these discussions have been conducted by Jocky and Barry.

"The board expects Jocky Scott will continue to discharge his responsibilities as manager to the best of his considerable abilities for the remainder of his current contract.

"The board will support Jocky Scott fully throughout this period. Jocky will continue to have sole responsibility for team selection and tactics."

JOCKY STAYS - MEANTIME

Jocky Scott was gobsmacked we understand when told another three trialists would be arriving at Dens Park this week.

The under-pressure boss must surely now be resigning himself to not having his contract renewed in the summer following this latest revelation as Peter Marr the chief executive arrived back on Tayside last night.

He refused to make any comment about the situation at the moment, but is expected to have something to say later this week.

Just who the new trialists are remain unclear, and to who's advice was sought also remains open to debate, but clearly the influence of Steve Archibald appears to be growing amidst speculation he's lining up the players for him to manage next season, something he has consistently denied.

It's also been revealed his bid to take over Airdrie will be rejected today, adding to the speculation his £3 million investment cash could come Dundee's way. And add to all of this, Bernt Schuster is expecting to be given Scott's job with Archibald taking an executive role at the club.

PREST SPEAKS OUT

New signing Martin Prest claimed last night manager Jocky Scott hasn't spoken to him since his arrival on Tayside.

He became the club's sixth signing as the mystery as to who will replace Scott next season continues.

He said: "It's very uncomfortable for me to go abroad and find a manager who doesn't speak to me.
Normally when you join a new club the manager sits down with you and has a proper chat, but that hasn't happened here at all.
I have read in the papers about all the speculation about his position and I understand that he doesn't feel happy about the directors bringing in players without his authority.
But it's not my problem. I'm caught in the middle of the situation. All I know is he doesn't talk to me."

He may be spoken to about speaking to the press, however, as Scott continues to be in charge - for the moment.

SCHUSTER SAYS "COME & GET ME"

Former German star Berndt Schuster yesterday insisted he's in line to become boss of Dundee.

The Marr's seem to be in the process of getting rid of Jocky and the Press have linked Steve Archibald to the job, however Schuster is the real managerial target with Archibald rumoured to be buying into the club.

Schuster said "Steve has been trying to get in touch with me for a couple of weeks."
! live in Spain but had to go to Germany which is why Ihave yet to speak to him.
But if I was offered the job at Dundee then I would say yes.
I don't promise to make them champions, because I know they are a small club but I can help them be the third team behind Rangers and Celtic"

CHOPPER WILKIE WANTED BY LEEDS

Leeds United are eyeing a move for Lee "Chopper" Wilkie.

The towering 19-year-old centre back has been watched three times by the Premiership outfit.

Elland Road's Scottish scout Mike Jackson has been given a watching brief on the 6ft 3in Dundee-born stopper.

MARR RETURNS FROM SPAIN - STILL NO COMMENT

Jocky Scott maintained his dignified silence about talk that the directors were plotting to get rid of him when he arrived at Dens, the only thing on his agenda was the daily work-out.

"All the boys are in today and we are going out training, that’s about it," said Jocky.

This afternoon, a spokesman for Dundee owner Peter Marr made it clear there would be no statement on the manager’s future today.

Mr Marr was in a series of meetings, not all football-related, and these would take up his entire day.

There is a possibility that he will break his silence on Jocky Scott’s future at some point tomorrow, although the spokesman could not guarantee that.

Over the weekend, pressure has been mounting on the Dundee board to clarify their position regarding Jocky and whether or not he will be offered a new contract when his current deal expires in the summer.

That such clarification would see the club confirming a parting of the ways seemed even more likely after German Berndt Schuster confirmed his interest in becoming manager to a national newspaper.

The former Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid star is quoted as saying he is expecting a call from his old friend Steve Archibald to offer him Jocky’s job and that he would accept when that call came.

For his part, Jocky admitted he was aware of the story, but declined to comment.

What he was willing to do was rubbish any suggestion he was refusing to use the players signed by the board without his knowledge and with the help of Archibald in recent weeks.

Against Hearts on Saturday only one of the six board signings, Javier Artero, was used - and he only came on for the last 20 minutes. There were, however, good reasons for that.

"I used Artero from the start against Hibs last week, but he got injured and had only had a couple of days training since. With Patrizio Billio coming in to play after not having much training either, I didn’t think I could take the chance with him.

"As for the boys (Martin Prest, Barry Elliot and Chris Coyne) who were signed on Friday, it would be irresponsible of me to use players who I haven’t seen. Before I use them I need to know they can handle the situation.

"Once I have seen them, if I think they can do a job they will play - it is as simple as that."

Jocky will get his first look at the trio when they turn out for the Under-21s against Hearts on Wednesday night - all three still qualify for the Under-21 League. Featuring as an over-age player will be winger Nicky Banger, who the manager feels could be close to a first-team return.

MARR RETURNS FROM SPAIN

The following story was printed in todays Dundee Courier:

Dundee’s chief executive Peter Marr Marr returned to Tayside last night and insisted showdown talks with manager Jocky Scott are not on the agenda because there is no need for them!

Astonishingly, according to Marr the furore surrounding his club has been generated by the media-and is not the result of his board foisting six signings on Scott.

"I don’t see that there is a situation that needs to be addressed," he claimed.

"As far as I am concerned nothing has changed since I was last here.

"I said then that we would sit down and look at Jocky’s position and that of the players whose contracts are up in the summer when we knew which league we would be playing in and that remains the case.

"I don’t see any problem. The media are reading more into it than is actually there."

However, in criticising Press reporting of his club and the untenable, undeserved position they have placed Scott in, Marr completely contradicted his fellow board member Jim Connor by revealing the latest signings -Chris Coyne, Barry Elliot and Martin Hugo Prest-had been signed for nothing!

"There is so much inaccuracy in some of the stuff I have read it’s not true," he said.

"Who said the three boys we signed on Friday cost us £500,000? They never cost us a penny. They are three guys for the future and that’s the reason we signed them."

The answer he was looking for was Jim Connor.

Marr went on to reiterate that Scott-who in what seemed a clear act of defiance included only one of the six men signed behind his back against Hearts on Saturday (and Javier Artero, the man in question, got only a 20-minute run-out as a sub)-was free to decide whether any of the new faces saw first-team action.

He also denied that the presence of Steve Archibald at Dens for the goalless draw with the Jam Tarts was in any way significant.

"Jocky has used some of the players who’ve come in when he has wanted to-quite successfully I believe-and he will continue to use them if he feels it is right," stated Marr.

"As far as Stevie Archibald being at the game is concerned, his agency handles the three Spanish lads and the only reason he was there, as far as I know, was that he was hoping some of them might be playing."

However Marr’s comments will do nothing to dampen down the speculation that has engulfed Dundee.

The fact is he and his fellow directors have completely undermined the authority of their manager, whose existing deal runs out in three months’ time, and there is surely no way to repair the damage done to the relationship between Scott and his employers.

However if the Dark Blues hierarchy hope to save themselves from having to pay the remainder of Scott’s contract by pressuring him into quitting it would seem they are in for a disappointment-Scott indicated in the immediate aftermath of Saturday’s game that he will have to be pushed.

Scott was reluctant to comment on the quite undeserved position he has been placed in, instead insisting he was concentrating on gaining maximum return from Dundee’s eight remaining matches to ensure they do not finish bottom of the table.

But questioned on whether he expected to be around for the run-in he said, "I don’t control that. I want to be here for the next eight years but I have no control over the situation.

"I’ve got a job to do here though and I won’t walk away."

Whether Saturday proves to have been his last match in charge remains to be seen-but if it does, what a pity it did not yield three points.

Dundee might well have won, especially if James Grady had tucked away a couple of wonderful scoring opportunities which fell to him early on. And what decent-minded follower of football-Hearts fans apart-would not, privately at least, have given a little cheer?

The Dens board members apparently see nothing wrong in the way they have acted and it has to be said there was no great outpouring of support for Scott from his club’s supporters at the weekend.

It must also be accepted that given they effectively own the club, Peter Marr and his brother Jimmy-who have, in building the new stands at Dens and bringing stability to Dundee, achieved much to be proud of-can hire and fire as they see fit.

But there is a way to go about things and the treatment of Scott-who by any fair judgment has done a fine job over the past two years-cannot reasonably be defended.

And despite Marr’s explanation, the presence at the Hearts game of Archibald, who is still tipped to take on a role at Dens -albeit not it seems that of manager-conveyed the impression that if the board realise the position they have put their manager in they simply don’t care.

However there is considerable sympathy for Scott, both inside and outside Dens.

Without specifically mentioning Dundee, Hearts boss Jim Jefferies, for example, observed, "If you take team affairs and the signing of players out of a manager’s hands, it makes his job very difficult."

And as a direct consequence of the length of deals given to two of the latest acquisitions- Coyne and Elliot-the board can expect to have several members of the playing staff seeking clarification of their futures. For example, Grady-who is in the same contractual position as Scott and was advised Dundee’s own future would have to be clear before his could be sorted-has just seen newcomers handed THREE-YEAR deals.

GRADY BACKS JOCKY

Dundee striker James Grady has revealed that the Dark Blues squad are 'right behind' under-pressure boss Jocky Scott. Scott has come under extra strain in recent weeks after an increasing number of calls suggested that his time at Dens Park might soon come to an end. Indeed, his tenure at the club is shrouded in mystery after the Dundee board brought in three players on transfer deadline day without his prior knowledge or consent. Indeed, Dundee have been linked with a move for former Scotland international Steve Archibald, as Scott's position at the club becomes increasingly undermined. Nonetheless, Grady says the players are all pulling their weight for the boss, despite the speculation surrounding his future. "None of the players know what's going on and nobody has said anything about it really. "I've not read papers, but we all know about it so we all use it as motivation. "I've been speaking to the boys and we're quite angry about the situation because we don't know what's going on. "But we did quite well against Hearts and the atmosphere in the dressing room suggests we're all pulling together and we'll keep on fighting and trying to win games."

DEES AGAIN LINKED WITH WRIGHT

A story which is again circulating today and which was first reported on this site back on Dundee are amongst a number of SPL clubs being linked with a summer move for Bradford City full back Stephen Wright. The former Scotland international has barely featured for the Bantams this season after falling behind Wayne Jacobs and Andy Myers in the pecking order. He is now thought to be ready to make a free transfer switch back to Scotland in the summer. The former Aberdeen and Rangers star is also a target for the Dons and Kilmarnock - who along with Dundee - have all expressed an interest in bringing the player back to Scotland during the close season.

We will await developments as Peter Marr is rumoured to be arriving back in the city tomorrow from Spain.

And it seems Scott was also kept in the dark about Archibald's presence at the match. Jocky said: "I didn't know that he was here. I don't want to comment on anything. These things are private and just as I said before they should stay that way.
"I don't find myself in any situation other than being manager of this club and this team."
