A Recent Branch Newsletter

In order to assist new members, but also available for other members who feel in need of a refresher or with specific questions the branch will be holding regular practical sessions at Fir Tree Farm over the season.  Below are details of these sessions with the arrangements.

Once again, this day long event on Saturday 22nd April is well worth a day out for those who have not been.  Ray Dowson may be able to point you in the direction of other members who are going so you can share petrol costs.

For those going, come and see me on the BBKA stand.

BEEKEEPING PRACTICALS

All the practicals will take place at the out apiary  Mr & Mrs Abbott, Fir Tree Farm, Pimbo Lane, Kings Moss, WA11 8RQ.  At 14.00 hrs.

The aim is for new beekeepers to be able to open up a hive, remove frames, recognize eggs, larva, sealed worker brood, drone cells, queen cells. To be able to assess the condition of the colony – has it enough stores? Are there eggs and brood at all stages? Is there space for the queen to lay? Is there space to store honey? Is there anything unusual (may be disease, seek advice)?  Instruction in the assembly of hives and frames.
