Local beekeepers have discovered pyrethroid resistant mites in the area. (April 2006) This is the first time they have been noted in the Lancashire area.
As a consequence members are now urged to undertake a series of non chemical methods of Varroa control (collectively called Integrated Pest Management or IPM). These include
· Open mesh floors · Drone brood culling · Dusting with icing sugar · The use of approved none pyrethroid varroacides
Experience from other areas that have had experience of resistant mites is that beekeepers who ignore these mites will suffer extensive losses unless they start to use IPM to keep the Varroa mite levels down. Further information from the National Bee Unit |
