Notes on the Churches of Derbyshire
by
J. Charles Cox
A transcript of the notes on churches in the general area of Alvaston, about three to four miles south of Derby city centre.
We are very fortunate in Derbyshire in having available to us a most valuable history of our churches compiled by Dr. J. Charles Cox and published over the years 1873 to 1879.
The history is in four volumes and churches in the general area of Alvaston are included in volume 4, The Hundred of Morleston and Litchurch.
Please be aware that the style of language used may in a number of passages be somewhat unfamiliar to us today. Dates are sometimes expressed as the number of years of the reign of the monarch, e.g. 27 Henry VIII. Also there is some use of heraldic terminology, particularly when describing monumental inscriptions.
The original page numbers of the book from which the transcript has been made are shown in brackets at the commencement of the text.
