Selectadisc,
Berwick St, W1
Selectadisc is
probably London's best known independent retailer. On any Saturday afternoon
in central London you're bound to see at least 2 or 3 people clutching a black
and orange plastic bag crammed full of the latest vinyl and CD releases. They'll
probably be smiling, or at least displaying the satisfied glow of someone
who's just bought a great or elusive record.
They've just been to Selectadisc, y'see, and they've probably just enjoyed
flicking through the large back catalogue sections and bargain new releases.
New vinyl albums sell for as little as £8.99 while CD albums are
almost always a good couple of quid cheaper than HMV or Virgin. They also
have amazing "give-away" deals on old stock, such as an immaculate
Olivia Tremor Control LP for a fiver.
Selectadisc is also a
good place for picking up flyers, and they stock a big range of specialist
music publications, including the legendary Fat Lace magazine.
Staff are generally friendly
but it's usually too busy for them to be able to offer tips or play records
for you.

for record window-shopping when you're too skint to buy anything.
