The Naturist Beach in Majorca That Started it All!

Cala Mequida is in the North of the Island, some 5 miles from Cala Ratjada the main town in the area. It was here that Fred Pontin began his attempt to widen the horizons of the British public by enticing them away from their Blue Coats and chips in the rain, to Blue coats chips and paella in sunny Spain.

The Pontins holiday camp was taken over by another travel company some time between my first visit in the late 60's replacing the Blue Coats with "Animateurs". The ball room remains the same but the entertainment is mainly provided by these enthusiasts with stars in their eyes and a Kareoke mike in their hands

map of majorca The basic accomodation that always looked so inviting on the outside, despite the concrete construction, has not improved; or hadn't when we revisited the place in the early nineties. But the camp was still the focal point of this small out-of-the-way tourist resort

A number of bars, shops and small holiday "villas" had sprung up around the camp but the biggest change and major surprise, were the naturists at the far end of the beach.

Mostly Germans, but with a smattering of Spanish recruits who would not have dared to wear a bikini in the old Franco days. This is not an official beach. But there was never any trouble and it was obvious that the poeple there, specially the Spanish, had been there before.

There is not demarcation line, the textile beach sort of disolves into the naturist beach as you walk from the Pontin's end to the other. As you walk, bikini tops are gradually discarded along with swimming trunks until somewhere just past the half way mark, everyone is naked.

We have not been back since. The following year, we joined the Naturist Foundation and our lives, and holidays, have never been the same. If you are looking for a beach in the north of the island, this may be what you're looking for. But it may be as well to check it out with a visit before committing yourself to staying in the area. Although, that part of the island is so underpopulated and underused that there must be other beaches.
