Face Value
Crewe Limelight Club
18/7/01
Verdict: Pure Unadulterated Entertainment
There was only one issue in Crewe last Wednesday night.....and that
was "is this a brilliant night out or wot"? Face Value live...WOW
After G2, it is now well documented (by me mainly) that I informed Mr
Wilkinson that Face Value were crap due to sound problems....without
realising to whom I was talking......TWO LARGE HUMBLE PIES PLEASE.
I WAS WRONG. Face Value are NOT crap. G2 was not their best
performance, but Crewe was a superb night out...being entertained
like I haven't been entertained for a long time. I have seen lots
of tribute bands....I love Regenesis, In The Cage, G2enesis, Suppers'
Ready, Acoustic Moods, Invisible Touch.... and now I can say that I
would go a long way to be entertained by Face Value. I spent part of
the gig almost in tears with the beaty of the sound (many too many
hours of dedicated technology hours have been spent achieving a great
great sound!!!) and the spent half an hour on the dance floorwith
about 30 people having a good time...... those dancing ranged form
about 18 to 60+ (Alan H???....lol)
It was a fabulous tribute to good music....to Genesis and PC. It was
a fine tribute to good musicians. It was a fine tribute to
traditional performances and modern technology in the hands of
skilled musicians. Vocals were the 'muts nuts'...Mama and In The
Air Tonight....bleedin 'ell lad!!!!....and Easy Lover.......dig those
harmonies boys!!
Whether it was Afterglow or Susudio....Home by The Sea or That's
All.... whether it was Domino or Can't Hurry Love, Many Too Many or
Throwing It All Away, we had a ball in Crewe on Wednesday.....
There I was with a friend who travelled from Hatfield, who isn't a
Genesis fan, or a Collins fan, but who is a fanatical music fan, we
joined with Michelle and her gang, and then we were introduced to Mr
Alan Hewitt (the honour of being in the company of this legend was
almost too much...until he started dancing)....
To a crowd in excess of 100 ......... FV gave us 150 minutes of
absolute pleasure. I am not the owner of one Collins solo CD, and I
am not the most appreciative of Motown, but but but but....... it
didn't matter. Many Too Many was just fabulous.... Acoustic
Afterglow was splendid, and then the sight of a team of lads in their
late teens doing the We Can't Dance routine across the dance floor in
well practiced style, shaking hands with the band after each track,
and then being joined by Alan Hewitt for a boogie....now that WAS a
sight for sore eyes.....
Face Value entertained everybody from age 15ish up to 70+. People who
just turned up to see what was on had a ball. People who love every
era of genesis had a ball.... Alan Hewitt had a ball..(when you
dance...ones hips are supposed to work in synchronisation Alan!!)
No....it wasn't all live.....it was heavily sequenced..... who cares?
No....there weren't too many diminished 5ths.......so??
No....not many of the tracks lasted more than 4 minutes.....and?
Yes...it was a fine night out with excellent music/tunes/fun/frolics/
Yes...that man is more like Phil Collins than the man himself.
Thanx to Face Value for a superb night of lung-guddering heavy
chords, delicate guitars, wonderful vocals and pure entertainment.
Now that's what I call a tribute!!!!!!
PS....already spoken to my Crewe hotelier about The Limelight Genesis
Weekend. I'll be there and I will be working on quite a few other
people who are into a good time......NICE ONE FACE VALUE.
