"Another day at The Limelight Club" Face Value in concert at The Limelight Club Crewe on Wednesday 18th July 2001. Review by: Alan Hewitt.
Twice in a week… No I'm not talking about my sex life, merely the fact that this was my second visit to this club in a week following on from a magnificent performance by Carl Palmer's band there earlier in the week.
Anyway, here I was again about to watch the band enthral us with their take on so many of Phil and Genesis' classic songs. They wasted no time in getting the show under way with a stunning performance of Mama segueing into Something Happened On The Way To Heaven and the classic balladry of Against All Odds which were all delivered faultlessly as usual. I know that some people (myself included) had expressed reservations about the fact that the band does not have a drummer but believe me, after this opening salvo the audience couldn't care less!
No Son Of Mine was next and John delivered the vocals in an impassioned way almost "Phil perfect" but sorry John, the full head of hair gives it away! The racy Don't Lose My Number and the camp humour of Jesus He Knows Me kept the momentum going before we were taken down a notch or two for I Wish It Would Rain Down which gave Will Smith's guitar playing a chance to really shine - nice one, matey!
A personal favourite followed with a brilliant rendition of Follow You Follow Me before John took us all by surprise by rendering the story of "Old Harry " the criminal which almost gave me heart failure 'cause I thought they had rehearsed Robbery Assault & Battery but instead we got a damn fine version of Home By The Sea which almost blew the roof off. Drama piled on drama as In The Air Tonight came next before one of the true highlights of the show for me personally…. Many Too Many a greatly underrated song from a much maligned album but I love it, and this version brought a tear to the eyes again… simply wonderful!
Another Day In Paradise got everyone who wasn't already singing, cheering along and I Can’t Dance got off to a great start when three lads got up on the dance floor with a perfect "dance" routine which soon got everyone on their feet. From then on it was a non stop party as the guys threw everything into the rest of their set which had already lasted longer than many major acts' sets these days! By the time we got to the final song of the main set itself everyone was delirious for more but first they had to endure an "announcement" from yours truly as John invited me on stage to make the official announcement of next year's "Genesis Weekend" which was greeted by cheers from the enthusiastic crowd.
The band returned to bring us the glorious acoustic Afterglow which is without doubt a magnificent testament to the band and in particular Tony Cole's keyboard playing. Can it get any better than this? The finales were maybe a tad predictable but essential nonetheless. Turn It On Again and Take Me Home rounded off a perfect evening and on this showing, these guys are going to be a major hit at the "Genesis Weekend"
All that remains really is to thank the guys for yet another marvellous night's entertainment. Their musicianship and genuine desire to entertain shine through and the fact that they managed to get me on the dance floor is a minor miracle in itself but not a sight for the faint-hearted! If they are playing in your area; go and see 'em - you won’t regret it… but your vocal chords might!
