Hiya all,

I don't usually contribute to Paperlate, I feel better lurking at the edges occasionally lifting my head above the parapet to say a few words. However I really must recommend the PC/Genesis tribute band Face Value. I saw them tonight and I was blown away by their musicianship and respect for the material. The frontman John Wilkinson, has a great voice and personality to match. He sounds a lot like PC but never descends into 'Stars in their Eyes' banality. He is accompanied by a great guitarist (Will Smith) and an absolute wizard of a keyboard player (Tony Cole). The set lasted around two hours .

The crowd loved it all and demanded more. I had a great time and would recommend this band to anybody.

Seeing Face Value has made me determined to get to G2, I'm going to try and wangle an afternoon off work so I can get to Guildford on Friday night. Let's hope the trains are on time....

Regards,

Stephen W

Yes indeed. Braved the elements and drove through torrential rain up the M6 to darkest Crewe this evening and can say that Face Value were excellent. Anyway, it was well worth it. Not unlike hearing Tony Patterson for the first time inasmuch as John Wilkinson sounded so much like Phil Collins it was uncanny! They did superb versions of later period Genesis stuff and Phil Collins solo classics such as Mama, I Can't Dance, Another Day In Paradise, Follow You Follow Me, Don't Lose My Number and Jesus He Knows Me. They have loads more in their repertoire too, such as Tonight Tonight Tonight, Afterglow, Invisible Touch, Sussudio and Take Me Home among others.

When I looked at the people playing in Face Value. I noticed no Drummer. I was wondering how they cover the drum parts? Hey I heard the Tonight, tonight mp3. Sounds great guys. Great Keyboards too! Keep it up the great playing!!!!

My thoughts exactly before i went to see the lads on Sat. night 20/1/01. Believe me, these lads sound grreat without a drummer; and Tonight..... was the best track of the set-BRILLIANT! Keep it up lads- C U in Guilford for that pint i owe you!!

Well, I finally got off my butt and went along to see John and co. performing, not really knowing what to expect (I'm not usually into tribute bands). The result was a thoroughly enjoyable night. You would swear that it was PC actually singing some of the songs (I kid you not). I'll certainly be catching Face Value again soon and if you have a chance to see them I have no hesitation in recommending that you get along there, I don't think you will be disappointed!

Mark Rae ( G2 organiser ) replied to this with :

Couldn't agree more - if you like Phil Collins (and late period Genesis) music which is played and sung sounding just like the real thing, then Face Value won't disappoint. Top musicians, plus John is also a fantastic front-man - people actually get up and dance, for heaven's sake - it's almost as if they're having a good night out - what's all that about :-)

Face Value - Review

A Phil Collins tribute band with no drummer and a vocalist with hair? Eh??

I generally avoid tribute bands like karaokes and Greenall's pubs but thought I would give Face Value a chance. Accepting the difficulty that anyone has in copying what is one of the most distinctive and popular voices of the 80s (which hey what Collins effectively was) and knowing they wouldn't try and play Supper's Ready in a Farnworth pub, I was surprised at how enjoyable the evening was.

OK its a Thursday night in the Moses Gate Hotel - a far cry from Wembley stadium but its a couple of quid and the beer is drinkable. No real ale mind. Moses Gate customers are quite choosy in what they listen to and I bet the landlord didn't tell the band that if they were crap, the locals would ensure their stay was short-lived.

The warm up number was Many Too Many - an old favourite of mine. Essentially the set was Collins and genesis "hits". The high piece and methinks the one that worked best - was the wonderful "domino", which the band threw themselves into. John Wilkinson, vocalist also doubled as lights and sound mixer. and yes - he is worthy of singing the songs. The music (guitarist and keyboards) have mimiced the genesis sound and are extremely accomplished. Most importantly the threesome enjoy what they do and this is infectious. The real test with tribute bands is if u go home and dig out your collection. I ended up completing buying my Collins CD collection.

Go See - u will enjoy.
