Our Town - Ashton under Lyne
Ashton under Lyne, is the biggest market town of nine which make up the area of Tameside. Geographically, Tameside is approximately 8 miles east of Manchester on the edge of the beautiful Pennine hills. Click below to see the beautiful view we see every day from our front window.
Tameside is named after the River Tame which is one of the main sources of the River Mersey. The river divided the counties of Lancashire and Cheshire for centuries, and it's power was used during the industrial revolution (1800's) to drive the cotton and woollen mills.
The town, Ashton under Lyne, is also an important past and present feature of the region's canals. Three canals, the Peak Forest, the Ashton and Manchester, and the Huddersfield Narrow canals meet at the junction of the Portland Basin. The pre Victorian built canals linked the area with Birmingham and the Midlands, the North West and Yorkshire. They were used to transport coal, wool and other products around the country
