Jems` Page

Jem tells it in his own words. Pretty good at HTML, too, for a cat

Mioww! or rather Hello! I am Jem the tabby tomcat. I was born in May 1997 along with my two sisters to my mum, Moki. We all looked alike, us kittens and my mum. I never saw my dad. When I was very small I went to live with my Upright. I was sorry to leave my mum and sisters but soon became used to my House and my Upright. At first I lived in the kitchen and the back room. I had an enormous number of toys given me by my Upright, so many that at times it was difficult to get into the kitchen! My favourites were the balloons, especially yellow ones. I see yellow especially well. I used to play with these balloons until they eventually hid, and I could not find them. Even now, I sometimes find a balloon and play with it. Then I found that the back room had this plastic paper on the wall. If I jumped up, I could catch it with my claws and pull it down. It was tremendous fun! My Upright did not seem too happy with it, but every time I went into the back room I pulled down more of this paper.

It was all over the floor. In the end I removed all this paper up to a height of about four feet from all round the room. My Upright took it away. But it was really good fun! I also loved climbing up the curtains in the back room, They had a very coarse weave and I did not notice I was pulling all the threads. I must admit they did get in a terrible mess! I do not climb curtains now, as I grew out of climbing curtains. When I was a little older, my Upright allowed me to go all round my house as I wanted. Lots of new rooms to explore! I liked to climb up on the window ledges to look outside, but all the windows had these net curtains. I had tremendous problems with these. I used to catch my back claws in them, then they wrapped all round me. Then one day in the front bedroom, I had real problems. I climbed onto the window ledge as usual, but the net curtains wrapped around my back legs.

I then fell off the window ledge and dangled from the net curtains. My Upright came and rescued me. All the net curtains are now gone - they have vanished!
It was about this time that I first went out into the Big Room. I was scared at first, it was the biggest room I had ever seen. But my Upright had arranged a little door to the Big Room from the kitchen. I was soon going in and out. I now spend most of my time in the Big Room, except when it is wet, or in the winter when it is very cold. I soon found out that the Uprights next door had built an enormous cat litter - real earth - in their garden. This was strange because they have no cat. All the local cats use it, although one day the bigger Upright came out and was angry, shouting something about a "vegetable patch". I took off over the fence. What strange cats Uprights are, using a cat litter to grow vegetables!

About this time I started to catch mices. I am very good at this. I have now caught about sixteen, and I always bring them into the kitchen where I leave them with their feet in the air. When I come back later, they are gone. I think my Upright eats them.
By now I had made friends with all the cats in the road. And there are a lot of them! some of the Uprights live with up to four cats, so there are really more cats than Uprights. One night in the summer of 1998, I was out prowling about 2 am., and I saw that some Uprights had piled up all their garden furniture, containers and so on upon their patio. I think they were re-doing their garden. I just had to climb this enormous pile. As I reached the top it toppled and crashed with an enormous noise! I ran away and came in through my little door. But all the lights came on everywhere due to the noise, dogs barked everywhere, and some of the Uprights went out into their gardens. What fun!

One day recently I caught a rat. Not a big rat, more a baby. Did I have a job getting it through my little door! Then it jumped out of my mouth and ran away. I chased it and it ran into a bedroom. It was hiding. My Upright seemed very concerned, and so was I. I was there mostly in that room for two days. I could hear it scratching at times, and almost caught it. My Upright was not very happy, it kept appearing all over the place, but I did my best to catch it. After two days, my Upright managed to drive it out of the bedroom. It ran back down to the kitchen and hid. My Upright opened the back door and it suddenly shot outside and away. I chased it for about a quarter of a mile, but never caught it. I was so tired I went inside and slept for 14 hours.
Sometimes I have to go and see an Upright called Vet. I am not happy going in my carrier in these funny metal boxes with wheels Uprights travel around in, but do not mind Vet. There are always lots of dogs there but they cannot get me in my carrier. In the summer I played with some wasps, got stung, and got very ill. I had to be rushed to see Vet, as I was very poorly. Vet sorted it out, but my Upright was not happy. Something about using up all my insurance excess, about £30. But I know nothing about this money stuff.

Life is much quieter now. I still catch mices, but grew out of climbing curtains and removing wallpaper. I sleep a lot of the time, and the rest of the time I am out with my friends, the Russian Blue, the Persian, my ginger friend Marmalade, and all the others. But I still remember my early adventures, and my first encounter with the Big Room.

Jem is heavily committed at the moment in sleeping, prowling, catching mices, and consuming large quantities of Colley steak. However, he will find time to add to his story now and again.
