The Wickerman Festival
Kirkarswell Farm, Dundrennan near Kirkudbright July 18th, 19th and 20th 2003

This is a wicker festival at Kirkarswell Farm, Kirkudbright.  There is a 30 feet wicker man already built and another one is being constructed.  If anyone interested in building these structures would like to help then contact Sid Ambrose at  sida@dumgal.gov.uk
For more information regarding the festival which has a dance and "cult" music go to

I assume that this festival is a spin off  from the horror  film "The Wicker Man" 1973 which was filmed in the Kirkudbright area and also in Plockton in the Western Highlands starred, Edward Woodward, Britt Ekland, Christopher Lee, Ingrid Pitt and many of the Kirkcudbright locals.  The whole concept is based on an ancient fertility rite that takes place during the Beltane (May) festival of the old Celtic Calendar. See http://www.tartans.com/articles/wickerman.html
You can find out more about Beltane at: http://www.chalicecenter.com/beltane.htm
There is more on the whole idea of burning a wicker man at this site: http://www.earthspirit.org/fireheart/fhwkman.html

and pictures of making a wickerman etc at: http://www.gallica.co.uk/celts/wickerman.htm

There was a very large willow sculpture (12 meters)  made by Serena De La Hey near Bridgwater, Somerset
which was called the Wicker man or Angel of the South,  and cost £15,000 to construct.  It was burned down in May 2001 in an arson attack.  http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/uk/newsid_1319000/1319215.stm
