How old do I have to be to start judo ?

Normally you have to be around about 7-8 years old to start judo.

What special equipment do I need ... ?

You will need a judo suit - this will probably cost £15-£20 ... but often you can borrow a sit for the first few weeks.  Later on you may wish to use shin guards.

What will I be taught ... ?

As a junior you will be taught throws and hold-downs.  As a senior judo player you will also learn how to apply strangles and arm-locks.

What kind of sport is judo ... ?

Judo is a fun sport!  It is a recognised Olympic sport and as such all coaches awarded coaching awards by the BJA have to demonstrate that they are fit to take the role.

Will I get the chance to enter competitions ... ?

Yes, if you wish.  Not all judo players enter competitions but many do - the choice is yours.  There are competitions and gradings aimed at beginners as well as advanced Judo players.

How much fun will I have  ... ?

Lots ... the more you do Judo the more you will learn.  A good Judo club will encourage its members to learn and have fun at the same time.
