Mustafa Sandal : Mustafa
accomplished his high school studies in Geneva (Switzerland) and did two years
of Marketing studies in
New Hampshire College (USA) but he gave up his studies for music and went back
to Istanbul (Turkey) his native country. Sandal met at the Gelisim Studios
well-known national musicians such as Onno Tunc, Selcuk bazaar, Ugur bazaar and
Garo Mafyan with whom he ended up working. The friendship with Bulent Tezcan
opened further doors for his musical career.
In 1994, his album "Suc Bende" sold 1,5 million Tapes and 200,000 CDs and became
the biggest selling album of the year. With this success Mustafa played 140
concerts in Turkey and 30 in Europe. Also known as songwriter producer, Mustafa
worked that same year with singer Sibel Alas on the album "Adam" that sold
400,000 copies. In 1997, 27 years old at that time, Sandal decided to move to
London, but his second album “Golgede Ayni", sold that summer over 2.5 million
Tapes and 600,000 CDs. Sandal gave over 200 concerts and has astonished the
population with his video of the single "Bir Anda" in which he has used tie-clip
techniques. For Mustafa, it became clear that he couldn’t leave to London as he
was also having irresistible offers such as producing the Turkish young rising
artist Izel.
In 1998, he recorded and released the album "Detay" of which "Aya Benzer" was
the first single. The song was quickly n°1 in the Turkish charts and the album
won two Kral Awards (which is in Turkey the equivalent of the Grammy awards). In
that same year, he toured in the USA, in Germany, Austria, Denmark, Holland,
England, Sweden, Turkmenistan and Aserbeidschan.
In 1999, Sandal signed a contract with Sony in France, which made him worldwide
operational. "Araba", one of his largest hits, came out with remix-versions for
the European market.
In June 2000 Mustafa Sandal published his album "Akisina Birak", a joint venture
work with the composer and musician Iskender Paydas. "Tek Gecerim" and "Hatirla
Beni" were two great hits form this album. Besides Sandal established its own
label Yada Productions, in order to be able to produce other artists more
independently. In June 2002 Mustafa Sandal finally brought his latest album
"Kop” out with the hits "Pazara Kadar" and ”Kop”. This album led him this time
to Russia and Bosnia-Herzegovina. That same year, Mustafa won a Kral Award for
"Best Pop star".
In 2003, with the remix of his Top hit "Aya Benzer" Mustafa Sandal (featuring
Gulcan) was back to Europe. He reached the top 10 in Germany, entered the
Austrian Charts and did very well on Star Radio’s top 40. In 2004, he released a
very nice song called "Araba 2004".

Khaled
is the leading artist for the modern form of Algerian desert blues known as Raï.
Certainly he's been its most successful modern exponent, the first to find
success on the international stage. Born Khalidu Hajji Brahim in Oran, Algeria, the
traditional centre of Raï, he was attracted to music from an early age,
especially to Raï, which was seen at the time of the music of outcasts, drunks,
and prostitutes, although he also loved James Brown and the Beatles. He taught
himself to play guitar, bass, harmonica, and accordion, releasing his debut
disc, "Trigh Lycee," when he was just 14. Leaving home, he began on the
nomadic life of the musician, performing frequently at clubs, parties, and
weddings (the only places where Raï was seen as an "acceptable" form of
entertainment). It was in the early '80s that Cheb (meaning "young") Khaled's
fortunes changed, when he met up with producer Rachid Baba Ahmed, who was
revolutionizing the Raï form by introducing Western electric instruments and
studio techniques. Together, they changed the face of the music. Khaled was the
right voice at the right time and the addition of drum machines, synthesizers,
and guitars took the music to a new generation, even though much of it continued
to be censored by the Algerian government, which considered the style
subversive. A number of those early tracks can be found on Le Meilleur de Cheb
Khaled on Blue Silver.
Youssou N'Dour is one of the most celebrated African musicians in history. A
renowned singer, songwriter, and composer, Youssou's mix of traditional
Senegalese Mbalax with eclectic influences ranging from Cuban samba to hip hop,
jazz, and soul has won him an international fan base of millions. In the West,
Youssou has collaborated with musicians Peter Gabriel, Sting, Neneh Cherry,
Wyclef Jean, and others. In Senegal, the country of his birth, Youssou is a powerful cultural icon
actively involved in social issues. CD's available - Set and Hey You!

Cheb Mami was born in Saida, a City in
the South West of Algeria at the frontier of traditional Bedouin culture and
modern urbanism. Mami is exceptional in that he is an authentic writer composer
of Raï music. His talent and clear voice were
immediately hailed on his debut in 1982. Born into Algeria's post independence
generation, Mami like many other young Algerians , was influenced by pop, rock
and Salsa as well as the local artists and those imported from the middle east.
It is therefore no surprise to find all those ingredients on his album, Let Me
Raï whose release and promotion were seriously jeopardised by the Gulf War. His
new Album, recorded in Los Angeles marks the return of this multi influence,
Mediterranean through his acoustic approach with Greek, Spanish and Turkish
ingredients as well as the more modern influences already mentioned. There is
also a hint of Reggae from the Kingston suburbs or Rap from the Brooklyn
ghetto's. So it is only natural that the album entitled Saida which in Arabic
means, the happy one.
For twenty years now Mami has been developing Raï,
which means 'advice' or 'opinion,' making it a growing phenomenon all over the
world with the help of the king of Raï,
Khaled. Raï is a music that found its
beginnings, like all great music genres, in the slums of the ignored community.
After years of acclaim in Africa (Algeria) and France, and following the
grassroots path of reggae and rap to become a new voice in music for the people,
Raï is just now being recognised by the USA
and Europe.
I guess that makes it official.
