Conference Nth News and results : 26th & 27th December 2004
                    Stalybridge Celtic still bottom

26th December 2004 :
The Boxing Day Nationwide North programme was hit by postponements, with the top-of-the-table sides, including leaders Alfreton Town, suffering the most.

The matches between Hucknall Town and Alfreton, Harrogate Town and Bradford Park Avenue, Hinckley United versus Kettering Town, Vauxhall Motors against Runcorn FC Halton and Worcester and Nuneaton Borough all fell foul to frozen pitches.

The team to profit most out of the situation were Southport, who took over as leaders after beating bottom-of-the-table Stalybridge Celtic 2-0 at Haig Avenue.

And it was leading scorer Terry Fearns (pictured) who was once again ‘Port’s hero as he bagged a brace to see off Peter Wragg’s strugglers in front of a slightly disappointing crowd of 1,101.

Fearns’ opener arrived a minute after the half-time break and he sealed victory with the second with 12 minutes to go.

Altrincham also made a move up the table into fourth spot after winning 1-0 at Stafford Rangers’ Marston Road.

A crowd of 1,033 saw a tight game won in the end by a single 64th minute Colin Little effort for the visiting Robins.

Redditch United could also have made a significant move in the table if they had managed a win at struggling Midlands neighbours Moor Green.

However, it was the Moors who triumphed and stepped out of the bottom four as a consequence.

Former Woking man Jae Martin scored the only goal of the game on the quarter-hour mark.

Worksop Town could have joined Southport at the top of the table if they had beaten Gainsborough Trinity at the Northolme.

However, they had to be content with a share of the spoils from a 1-1 draw in front of a crowd of 926.

But it could have been much worse for the Tigers as they trailed Simon Bird’s 26th minute opener for Trinity going into stoppage time. Gary Browne salvaged a draw with the equaliser.

27th December 2004 : Only one of the two scheduled matches in Nationwide North survived the weather with the Tameside derby between Droylsden and Ashton United at the Butcher’s Arms being frozen off.

However, Barrow against Lancaster City did go ahead and it ended all-square at Holker Street in front of a crowd of 1,371.

The recalled Gavin Knight quickly reminded Bluebirds’ supporters that he still knows where the net is by opening the scoring in the 7th minute.

Peter Thomson (pictured) equalised for City on 24 minutes from the penalty spot but Mark Salmon restored the home side’s lead 11 minutes into the second half.

But that lead lasted barely a minute as Thomson grabbed his second of the game to level matters.

Unibond Premier News and results : 27th December 2004

The UniBond League Premier Division fixture list on Bank Holiday Monday was badly hit with five of the scheduled matches being frozen off, including league leaders Workington’s game at Spennymoor United.

However, the Reds’ three nearest rivals all managed to get their games on and all three, Whitby Town, Hyde United and Farsley Celtic, all managed victories to cut the lead to four points.

Whitby are second but they were made to work hard for the points in their home derby against Bridlington Town, whom finished with ten-men and missed a penalty.

Dave McTiernan scored the only goal of the game in the 33rd minute in front of a bumper 542 crowd.

However, Whitby ‘keeper David Campbell became the hero when he saved the normally reliable Martin Thacker’s spot-kick. Brid’s Paul Palmer was later dismissed for a second bookable offence.

Hyde United attracted a 601 crowd to Ewen Fields for their game with Witton Albion, and they too were made to scrap for the points.

In the end, Craig Buckley’s 35th minute effort proved enough to earn the Tigers three valuable points.

Farsley entertained Yorkshire neighbours Guiseley and an excellent attendance of 692 saw the home side triumph 3-1.

Former Celtic striker Scott Jackson gave the visitors a 25th minute lead and it took the home side until 10 minutes after the break to level through Michael Midwood.

Midwood scored his second 9 minutes from time and James McDaid made sure with a third in injury-time.

Surprisingly, the biggest crowd of the day in the Premier Division was at the International Stadium where 708 watched the north-east derby against Blyth Spartans.

Rob Huntley gave the home side an early 4th minute lead but Michael Laws equalised on 28 minutes and Paul Taylor (pictured) grabbed what proved to be Gateshead’s winner on the hour-mark.

Radcliffe Borough travelled across to Marine’s Rossett Park and completed a good 3-1 win.

Ciaran Kilheeney gave Boro a 22nd minute lead and Paul McNally levelled 2 minutes after the break.

But goals from Gary Sampson on 70 minutes and Steve Foster on 88 sealed Kevin Glendon’s side’s success.

Rodney Rowe gave Ossett Town an early 4th minute lead at Ingfield against Bishop Auckland. But the visitors earned a share of the spoils when Steve Salvin equalised on 65 minutes.

Pics from the Stalybridge Celtic v Hyde pre season game.

Who will be the Champions of Tameside in 2005? At the start of the 2002-03 season I started a separate Tameside League Table for games played between the teams. Nothing for the winners except the opportunity to gloat at the opposition - what more could you want for nowt......

TAMESIDE UNIBOND PREMIER LEAGUE
Stalybridge Celtic were worthy champions of the Tameside Unibond Premier League last season. Hyde were unfortunately relegated to the 1st division and no longer figure. See below for this seasons table.
