Coast
There are numerous pretty beaches within a short distance of Borrowby: Staithes is a quaint old fishing village with cobbled streets, abundant fishermen's cottages and a fascinating rocky beach. Runswick Bay has a larger sandy beach, overlooked by steep cliffs. Sandsend, another long sandy beach on the way to Whitby. Each village has gift shops, general stores, good public houses and a variety of cafes and resturants.

Whitby
Whitby is an ancient fishing port with a skyline that is dominated by the ruins of St Hilda's Abbey, high on the East Cliff. Spreading below, a maze of alleyways and narrow streets run down to the busy quayside. From the old town, 199 steps lead up to the parish church of St Mary, one of the finest examples of Anglo Saxon churches in the country, and whose churchyard gave Bram Stoker the inspiration to write his world famous book, Dracula.

Inland
The whole of this area boasts beautiful countryside, but the highlights include:Danby - a lovely village which is home to the North Yorkshire Vistors Centre; Lealholm - a pretty village on the River Esk with stepping stones and sheep grazing the village green. Grosmont - a starting point for the North York Moors steam railway which runs to Goathland (of TV's Heartbeat fame) and onto Pickering
