[1999 French DVD review]

French DVD

FEATURES

The Menu system is can be configured to French and English
language versions. English audio in 5.1 and French 2.0 Mono
are the sound options giving the French DVD buying public a
bit of a raw deal when you consider the 1999 Pioneer release
has 2.1 Stereo. As a result, ambient sounds are subdued.
Subtitles are French, English, Spanish and Swedish. The
French subtitles have been re-interpreted for this release and
do not match the previous Pioneer release. Also unlike the
previous release, all sound and subtitle options are configurable
within the movie.

Picture Quality

The picture is presented in 16:9 anamorphic widescreen. The image
quality is fine although compared with the most recent versions, the
colours are more washed-out. As you can see on the left, the credits
which used to be in green are now white.

In fact, greens are heavily muted throughout the movie. This may
be a director approved copy of the movie as Michael Mann is known
to have prepared a colour-corrected version of the movie for release
this summer.

EXTRAS

Just the US trailer. The lack of Anchor Bay supplements is disappointing though. Perhaps MGM did not want to pay to license them and then have
to subtitle them into French.

SUMMARY

Simply, if you are French or French speaking, this is the best version
of Manhunter to own. . This is the TRUE cinema version with dialogue excised from the Anchor Bay version present and correct here.

"It will be you or me."
