FEATURES
Disc One is advertised as the theatrical version but it turns out (unsurprisingly) to
be the 'hybrid' version first seen on the original Anchor Bay 2001 release. The
menu design for this disc is quite gothic is very nice. Special features are the
trailer and the two mini-documentaries from the 2001 Anchor Bay disc.

Disc Two contains the Director's preferred version of Manhunter. This is the first time this cut of the movie has been made available in the UK. We also get the
world premiere of Michael Mann's commentary track.

Considering that the source of the cut scenes is 1-inch video, this is far superior to
the previously released Director's Cut. The picture is grainier than the disc one
version. However the biggest crime is that the this version of the film suffers from
some serious over-compression. Torch-lit scenes such as the one in the opening
credits suffer some obvious solarization, (i.e. there is banding in the light from the
torch as it passes over the stairs). A DVD5 SLSS disc has been employed for but
it is doubtful that all 4Gb of storage has been allocated. Around 4.35Mb/s average
bitrate is displayed on my player. I have higher hopes for the forthcoming Region 1
release.

SUMMARY
The Director's commentary is very educational for those wishing to learn more
about the making of this film. Mann calls it the Director's Preferred Version. It is different to the previous 'Director's Cut' as the scene where Graham meets Dr.
Chilton face-to-face is omitted.

However poor encoding of the Director's Cut and a 'theatrical version' which
is not the Theatrical Version at all leaves a sour taste in the mouth.

My advice? Cross your fingers for the new region 1 version!
