Review
With the exception of the trailer, this is a bare-bones release. The picture is framed at full-screen 4:3 and is
a mixture pan-and-scan and un-matted. The picture is carefully zoomed or scanned lower in places that avoid
the boom-mike appearing as it has in most previous VHS 4:3 releases. The credits sequence, for example, is
zoomed-in for the scenes and partially zoomed-out with thin black-bars for any name credits. The same
happens for the end credits. The trailer appears to be un-matted.

MGM has used the theatrical version of the film prepared at the same time as the most recent Anchor Bay and
Momentum releases that were of course the director's preferred version. MGM's own European versions are
anamorphic and their Japanese DVD also has a DTS soundtrack that is missing here.

I can only assume MGM could only license a 4:3 version of Manhunter for the US market.

Special Features

The only extra material on this disc is a Manhunter Trailer in 4:3 and a selection of
trailers for Species, Species 3(!) and Unspeakable and Wicker Park. That is also
a well-edited montage trailer of other MGM horror films.

Sound is 5.1 Surround with mono tracks for French and Spanish speakers. Likewise,
the subtitles are English, French and Spanish. The Spanish soundtrack is particularly
poor sounding.

SUMMARY

Buy the Japanese DVD for the best sounding theatrical version. The US Anchor
Bay disc is best for the Director's preferred version.
