Odd Job Man is not a job title that automatically lets you know exactly what they actually did. The vagary of the title was exactly why they chose it. They had been at a dinner party once and a lady sitting next to Aaron had asked about his profession. Usually they could get away with saying, “Oh, you know, this and that.” Unfortunately for Aaron, this lady was sitting at the very end of the table and was desperate to make conversation. So he told her about their last job was to flay the skin off Joey McTeazle and stub cigarettes out over every centimetre of his body. Her response was, “Oh, what an odd job. Is there much call for that then?”
Of course there wasn’t. You could really only do that particular job once. Unless you found someone else called Joey McTeazle but even then that wouldn’t have really worked because their contract had specified a specific Joey McTeazle. They were in the business of being employed over and over to carry out one-off specialist jobs. They nearly called themselves The Specialists but that sounded wank. So, Odd Job Men it was. Thanks to Joey McTeazle. Sort of.
