Cammy’s Monster

Cameron's Monster lived under his bed,
But his Mummy said, "Cammy, it's all in your head."
"Your Mummy knows best, and I do insist,
That ghouls, ghosts, trolls, and monsters simply do not exist."

She kissed his forehead and told him, "Night-night."
She walked out of his room and whispered, "Sleep tight."
She closed the door and darkness poured in all round
And Cameron knew that's when Monster would make its first sound.

From the silence it made its presence well known
As it let out a fearful, deep guttural moan.
"MUM!" Cameron called and his door opened wide,
He explained and she told him, "There’s just a car parking outside."

"The nighttime makes sounds that you hear every day,
Seem louder and different in a scarier way.
Listen very carefully to the noises you hear,
And your brain will tell you that there's nothing to fear."

She closed the door and Cameron lay back,
And he waited for Monster's next noisy attack.
This time he'd listen to the sounds from below
And see if it was something else that he'd know.

MONSTER SHUFFLED, SNUFFLED AND SCRATCHED!
So Cameron thought hard for something else the noise matched.
He sat up in bed and peered through the gloom;
The noise came from his hamster in the corner of his room.

MONSTER BANGED ON THE FLOOR!
What else was it? Someone had just knocked on the front door.
MONSTER LET OUT A GURGLE AND COUGH!
What else was it? Just a sound from the radiator as the heating turned off.

Monster grumbled! Wait! It was the man at the door; all he could hear was a mumble.
Monster let out a howl! Wait! A cat in the street was out on the prowl.
Monster snuffled. No, a breeze blew his curtains and they ruffled.
Monster sighed and overhead a plane flew by.

The wind blew against branches and created a clatter;
Monster did nothing to confuse the matter.
A floorboard creaked in the hall as his Daddy walked past.
Monster was completely silenced at last

Cameron closed his eyes, relaxed and pleased.
Then, from under his bed, Monster sneezed.
Cameron's eyes opened, what was that noise?
A cat? A baby? A plane? A horse? Or maybe one of his toys?

Cameron decided at last that enough was enough
He was made of much braver stuff
He leapt to the floor to give Monster a scare
And found, to his surprise, … That there was no monster there.

Cameron stood up and returned to his bed.
Perhaps Mummy was right, it was all in his head.
No Monster, no growling, no scratching, no creeping;
Nothing at all, at last Cameron was sleeping.

A Monster is anything that gives you the scares
Whether it’s the nighttime, a cupboard or under the stairs.
It’s a Monster’s job to make you feel haunted and hunted
And to make you more brave when you finally confront it.

Cameron's Monster had done its job right,
It’d shown him that there was no reason to be scared of the night.
Monsters don’t like to be seen, that’s why they hide in the gloom.
And that’s why Cameron's monster had finally gone …

… down the road, to a toy box in Danny's bedroom.
