401 Open land
Cultivated land, fields, meadows, grassland, etc. without trees, offering easy running. If yellow coloured areas becomes dominant, a screen (75%) instead of full yellow may be used.
Colour: yellow.

Defined as area symbol 401.0, and can be drawn with any drawing tool.
Care is needed at joins, overlap only where it is safe (usually if it is the same colour and always if it is the same symbol). If you need to share a common boundary with another symbol, draw along the edge with the control key to follow it exactly.
See minimum dimensions but specifically -
- Smallest area enclosed by a dotted line: 1.5 mm (diameter) with 5 dots.
- Smallest area of yellow full colour: 0.5mm˛.
This symbol is only appropriate when there is clear visibility and good runnability
Where the area starts to border the forest and there are occasional trees, then use the open land with scattered trees symbol.
The ISOM lays down the permissible combination of screens.
Open land was only allowed with indistinct marsh indistinct marsh. Now other screens may be used with full yellow, these are broken ground, stony ground, uncrossable marsh, and marsh.
There are several symbols that use full yellow as their background, effectively making a combination. None of these symbols may be combined with any other, apart from open land with scattered trees which has the same combination rules as open land.

The combinations with overprint symbols out-of-bounds area 709, and its cousin permanently out of bounds 528 and also the dangerous area 710 symbol, must be allowed, but are not specifically mentioned in the specifications.

Clearing: A small area free from trees in a forest.
Large areas of a single colour should be drawn in small chunks with overlaps.
Careful use of edge-matching should be applied where two differing types of areas meet, such as open and fight.
This is particularly important with the default definitions of water and car park to avoid colour clashes with yellow.
Single colours such as open can be safely overlapped to avoid white gaps.
