Returning home one night to the apartment above her book shop, Dido stumbles over the unconscious body of one of her more eccentric customers, an old derelict called Tom Ashe. Dido would say that there are already enough complications in her private life. But from the moment when she undertakes to get the old man to hospital, she finds herself sucked deeper into his secretive existence. Where does Ashe hide when he vanishes from the hospital, and why does he return to give her an ancient and valuable piece of jewellery? Does his presence really have something to do with the fact that he and Dido’s father, Barnabas, had worked together in SigInt (Signals Intelligence) at the end of the War?
But above all, who would murder this half-crazy old man and why? From one day to the next, a disbelieving Dido is drawn further and further into the mystery of Ashe. Even after his death the old man’s schemes entangle her. Why does he claim Dido as his next of kin and appoint her his executor? What dangerous clues has he left in his rubbish-filled lair in the basement of a deserted factory? Why has Scotland Yard concerned itself with this killing, and what does it have to do with the Egyptian embassy? Who is the man in the green car claiming to be Ashe’s dead son and why is he keeping watch on the book shop?
With the help of her father, Barnabas, and her unlikely guardian angel, young Ernie Weekes, Dido follows a twisting trail of deceit and danger which began half a century ago and leads to two more violent deaths before she discovers the perilous treasure Tom Ashe really left her.
