TEWKESBURY TOWN BAND 1999
Since its reforming in 1974 the Tewkesbury Town Band has continued a long history of entertaining the people of Tewkesbury and the surrounding area. The current band is a subscription band (members paying £48 per year), but enjoys the support of Tewkesbury Town Council who provide us with rehearsal facilities in the Town Hall. In return the band performs, free of charge, at the Civic Parade, the Remembrance Day Parade, the Civic Carol Service, the Tewkesbury Carnival and local charitable causes including the Pied Piper Appeal Fund, the Abbey's Animal Blessing Service, Abbey School Choir and Alderman Knight School Fete. In addition to our own fund raising Christmas Concert at the Roses Theatre, the band gives concert performances in Cheltenham, Evesham. Pershore, Droitwich and Stratford on Avon. As a contesting band, in the fourth division, contests are attended at Bristol, Leamington Spa, Weston Super Mare, Stroud, Wychavon and the Gloucestershire Brass Band Association contest in the Forest of Dean. The band rehearses twice a week for two hours to maintain a high standard of entertaining music. Members come from all walks of life in the local community from engineers, teachers, students, and the retired. The age range is from 12 to 70 years and in addition we have a thriving training band of 12 whose ages range from 8 to 10 years. Our current musical director, Nigel Morgan, who joined in 1997, is born and bred in Gloucestershire and works as a Chartered Accountant with Grant Thornton in Cheltenham. His experience covers thirty five years of brass bands including player/chairman of a local championship division band, eight tours to Germany and two performances in the Royal Albert Hall. The current band is at full strength of 29 members and fully supports Nigel's goals for the band, namely, to entertain the local public, to enjoy our music making and to encourage music making in our young players ( the future of the band) and to achieve success in the contest field. Below you will see a map of where we practice.
