Los Angeles in the 1960's

In the 1960's King Size Souvenir Picture Guides sold for $1. Here are some extracts and pictures.

It is as impossible to describe this city in few words, as it was to contain its growth within the basin where it had its humble beginnings back in 1781. Therefore, it is hoped that you will be guided best by pictures, brief titles, and a large easy to follow map. This site has been so designed-to help you get the most pleasure from your visit to this fabulous city.

Los Angeles is third largest in population and number one in area of all United States cities. It is located in a basin surrounded to the north and east by mountains and by the Pacific Ocean on the west and south. This geographic situation provides for much of the great variety of sport, entertainment and leisure time activity available to residents and visitors of this exciting city. There are few places in the world where one can play in the morning sun on a sparkling ocean beach and a few hours later be skiing down a snow-clad mountain, but a few miles away.

For glamour and night-time excitement the celebrity spots of Hollywood, Beverly Hills, and the famous "Sunset Strip", provide entertainment of every sort and often a chance to see one of your favorite movie or television stars.

For family adventure there is the incomparable Disneyland, near-by Knott's Berry Farm, and the remarkable trained whale at beautiful Marineland. In the field of art and music there are many offerings including the outstanding rnllections of the Huntington Library and Art Gallery in San Marino, and the Los Angeles County Museum in Exposition Park. The new Los Angeles County Museum of Art on West Wilshire Boulevard and the Music Center For The Performing Arts in Downtown Civic Center give Los Angeles a cultural complex unexcelled anywhere in the world.

In spite of what you may have heard, Los Angeles' Freeway system of highways is remarkable. With a little concentration on your part it will become your magic carpet to the wonders, attractions, and fun of this exciting wonderful golden city.
