Aeonium Aeonium must surely rank as one of the most enjoyable groups of succulents for the exotic gardener to grow here in the UK. They offer a surprising diversity of rosette and leaf form which as there are some sixty species is perhaps not unexpected. There are species growing flat to the ground as single rosettes or there are small to large shrubs from 4cm to 2m in height. One advantage of Aeoniums is that they soon develop into mature plants provided that ample root room and water is available. It is essential that a free draining soil be used for them. Flowering will occur within 2-3 years and the rosette will elongate as the flower spike developes. That rosette will die and will need pruning back. If they get too large cuttings are easy to take. Protection from frost is essential as they will quickly damage and die. My Aeoniums are grown close to a south facing wall and I wrap them in horticultural fleece on frosty nights. They do however enjoy the lower temperatures of autumn, winter and spring and most choose to grow and look there best during these times. Also there are quite a number that shut down for the summer shedding their outer leaves and looking quite bizzare with much reduced rosettes.
