Judith Mitchell

Cello

Formerly cellist in residence at the University College of North Wales, Judith Mitchell now lives in London where, in addition to her solo performances, she has played with many contemporary music groups including Gemini, the Almeida Ensemble, the London Sinfonietta and Critical Band

Judith Mitchell has an exceptionally wide ranging repertoire as well as a special interest in the music of the twentieth century. Her concerts, lecture recitals and workshops explore many aspects of the repertoire and its performance, particularly music involving live electronics, tuning and temperament, and unusual techniques such as double bowing.

In 1993/4 she was awarded a grant by the Arts Council of Great Britain to explore the use of electronics in overcoming the difficulties that microtonal music undoubtedly presents to string players. In 1996 she established the Contemporary Cello Studio to encourage and provide instruction in recent developments in cello playing and repertoire.

In addition to INTERFUSION commissions, recent solo commissions have included prizewinning works for cello and tape by Rodrigo Cicchelli Velloso and Gabriela Ortiz, and she has premièred works for solo cello by Richard Rodney Bennett and John Buller.

Recent performances include solo concerts, tours and broadcasts in Norway, the Netherlands and Germany. She has broadcast many times as a soloist for BBC Radio Three, and has played as soloist and ensemble player in many of the major British music festivals.

"....admirable performance, ... was as reasoned and controlled as the composer's argument..."

"...impressed one considerably on account of the cellist's ability to define purposefully its taut, inner logic..."
