Advancing five miles from Stokesley, through a richly-wooded
and well-watered country, we proceeded to Ingleby Greenhow or
Ingleby beneath the green hill, a small village situated near
the abrupt declivities of a lofty range of moorlands. The Manor
House is a noble, massive, antique residence, built in the reign
of Queen Elizabeth, being of a quadrangular form with courts,
situated in a picturesque vale, surmounted by hills of great
height richly ornamented with woods and plantations. The approach
from the village is by a tall stately avenue of ancestral trees,
at the end of which a striking view of the old baronial mansion,
with a round gateway and ivied arch, presents itself.
