We give below a suggested itinerary with the warning that we
have probably packed into 12 days what could and should take
much longer. The National Trust (www.nationaltrust.org.uk)
and English Heritage (www.english-heritage.org.uk)
properties alone could provide weeks of enjoyment.
DAY ONE
Explore Ingleby Greenhow. Visit 12th Century Church, locate butcher,
Dudley Arms. Walk to the top of Turkey Nab above Bank Foot Farm,
along moor to Blowith Crossing, down the Incline and follow old
ironstone railway route back to Bank Foot Farm and over public
footpath to Ingleby Manor. This walk takes at least three and
a half hours.
DAY TWO
York (www.york-tourism.co.uk).
The Minster, Viking Exhibition, Castle Museum, National Railway
Museum. Shop at Mulberry Hall (china and crystal), Laura Ashley,
Habitat, Bettys for tea. National Trust enthusiasts call at Beningborough
Hall near York on the way home.
DAY THREE
The Coast. Staithes, Runswick Bay, Whitby (Abbey 657 - 867 and
1077 - 1539 of St Hilda and Caedmon and setting for "Dracula"
- English Heritage),
Robin Hood's Bay, Ravenscar Hotel (finish of Lyke Wake Walk)
DAY FOUR
Osmotherley (start of Lyke Wake Walk). Visit 14th Century Mount
Grace Priory (National
Trust), the best preserved Carthusian priory in England.
On to Northallerton - market days Wednesday and Saturday.
DAY FIVE
Take Whitby Moor Road, then follow signs for Grosmont, starting
point of the North York Moors Steam Railway (www.nymr.demon.co.uk).
Take train to Goathland, a lovely moorland village featured in
"Heartbeat", rejoin train for Pickering. Return on
train to Grosmont. Take Esk Valley road and call at North York
Moors Centre at Danby Lodge on way home.
DAY SIX
Harrogate, splendid spa town. Garden enthusiasts should visit
Harlow Carr Gardens (www.harlowcarr.fsnet.co.uk).
Harrogate Spring Flower Show April, Autumn Flower Show September.
DAY SEVEN
Richmond (www.richmond.org.uk),
12th Century Castle, and the Dales Herriot Country.
DAY EIGHT
Newby Hall (www.newbyhall.co.uk),
Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal (National
Trust). Ripon, Cathedral (www.riponcathedral.org.uk)and
continuing tradition of Wakeman and Hornblower, who blows his
horn at the four corners of the market square each evening at
9.00pm. Lightwater Valley for children of all ages.
DAY NINE
Hutton-le-Hole, "the prettiest village in England"
and Ryedale Folk Museum (www.ryedale.co.uk).
On to Flamingo Land, Kirby Misperton (for children). Return to
moor road past Fylingdales Early Warning Station to join Whitby
- Guisborough Road.
DAY TEN
Durham, Magnificent Norman Cathedral, resting place of St Cuthbert
(www.dur.ac.uk).
Very good home made lunches and snacks in crypt, also excellent
book/gift shop.
DAY ELEVEN
Drive along beautiful Bilsdale, visit Spout House, 16th Century
cruck-framed thatched dwelling. Rievaulx Abbey (12th Century
fine Cistercian Abbey - National
Trust), Helmsley (good for shopping for take-home gifts)
and Helmsley Castle (English
Heritage). On to Nunnington Hall - National
Trust (Carlisle Collection of dolls houses), Castle Howard
- www.castlehoward.co.uk
(main location for "Brideshead Revisited"). A very
full day!
DAY TWELVE
Great Ayton. Captain Cook's Schoolroom Museum (www.captaincookschoolroommuseum.co.uk)
and 11th Century All Saints Church. On to Marton and Captain
Cook's Birthplace Museum in Stewarts Park, and the National Trust
property of Ormesby Hall nearby. The elegant stable block there
is also the home of Cleveland Constabulary's Mounted Police and
visits can be arranged in advance.
