The opening of Mossvale 'Miracle'
Church.
Before the purchase
of Mossvale Church, the fellowship known as the 'Happy Church' had met
for over ten years in a small back street basement hall in George Place
in the centre of Paisley. It was during this period that Robert Chalk
was ordained as Pastor.
In 1974 whilst he
was travelling in Switzerland, the elders discovered that the nineteenth
century building known as Mossvale Church on Greenock Road in Paisley,
was for sale due to a recent merging of two Church of Scotland congregations.
With Robert were the Scottish evangelists Bob and Kathy Owens - who
were able to confirm God's hand in this opportunity - it was the church
where they had first met, and they had passed it recently, seeing it
empty, and prayed over it that God would make it a revival centre.
The
building was purchased for an amazing £7000, as at the time you could
not have built it's equal for £70,000 - so it was decided to call it
'Mossvale Miracle Church'. The traditional pews in the lower sanctuary
and balcony could seat 700 - a big difference to the previous hall that
held only 80!
During a year's
hard work and redecoration,
central heating and new windows were installed and the official grand
opening was at 2.30pm on August 23rd 1975, followed by a fortnight of
evening meetings.
The ribbon was cut by Pastor James Keddie of Methil, and other special
guests were the Filipino Choir of Miracles led by Reverend Clyde Shields,
Reverend Simon Cameron, founder of Scotland's first full gospel Bible
School; and of course Bob and Kathy Owens.
