Accident & Emergency Department

Hospitals NHS Trust

The Royal Lancaster Infirmary Accident & Emergency Department is the major A&E department for North Lancashire, the South East Lake District and a small area of North West Yorkshire. A Helipad was operational from July 2004. We have a sister Minor Injuries Unit at the Westmorland General Hospital in Kendal.

The department sees about 42,800 new patients per annum, the summer being the busiest time of year due to tourism.

The department is one of only a handful of A&E departments nationwide to both be assessed and pass Health Service Accreditation. This external voluntary assessment is a recognition of the quality and dedication of the entire department's staff.
